The Story of the Lion, the Camel, the Jackal and the Crow

A Panchatantra Tale for Young Children

Chapter 1: The Mighty King of the Forest

In a vast forest filled with tall trees and flowing streams, there lived a powerful lion named Simba. He was the king of all animals, with a magnificent golden mane and a roar that could be heard from miles away.

ROAAAAR! When Simba roared, all the animals in the forest knew their king was nearby.

Simba was not just strong and mighty – he was also kind and fair. He protected the smaller animals from danger and made sure everyone in his kingdom was safe.

Living with King Simba were his three loyal friends: Chatty the crow, who had shiny black feathers and could fly high above the trees to see everything; Clever the jackal, who was very smart and always had good ideas; and wise old animals who gave him advice.

“Life is good in our forest,” Simba said one sunny morning, stretching his powerful muscles. “We have plenty of food, fresh water, and peace.”

Little did he know that soon a stranger would come to their forest, and their friendship would be put to a big test!

Chapter 2: The Lost Traveler

One hot afternoon, while Simba was resting under his favorite banyan tree, Chatty the crow came flying down with exciting news.

FLAP, FLAP, FLAP! “Your Majesty! Your Majesty!” Chatty called, landing on a branch above Simba’s head.

“What is it, my friend?” Simba asked, opening one sleepy eye.

“I saw something very strange while I was flying around the forest borders,” Chatty said breathlessly. “There’s a large camel wandering near the edge of our territory. He looks lost and very tired!”

Simba’s ears perked up. “A camel? In our forest? That is indeed strange. Camels usually live in the desert, not in forests like ours.”

Just then, Clever the jackal came trotting over. “Did someone say camel?” he asked, his sharp ears having caught their conversation.

“Yes,” replied Simba thoughtfully. “Chatty spotted a camel near our borders. The poor creature must be lost. As king of this forest, it’s my duty to help any animal in need.”

“Should we go see him?” asked Chatty, tilting his head curiously.

“Absolutely,” Simba decided. “Lead the way, Chatty. Let’s find this lost traveler and see how we can help.”

Chapter 3: Meeting Slowpoke the Camel

Following Chatty’s directions, Simba and Clever walked through the forest until they reached its edge. There, sitting sadly under a small tree, was the biggest camel they had ever seen.

The camel had light brown fur, long legs, and a tired expression on his gentle face. He was looking around nervously, clearly not knowing which way to go.

“Hello there!” Simba called out in his friendliest voice. “I am Simba, king of this forest. What brings you to our home?”

The camel looked up with surprise and a little fear. “Oh! Your Majesty!” he said, bowing his head respectfully. “I am so sorry for entering your territory. My name is Slowpoke, and I am terribly lost.”

“Please, don’t be afraid,” Simba said kindly. “Tell us your story. How did you end up so far from the desert?”

Slowpoke’s eyes filled with sadness. “I was traveling with a caravan of merchants across the desert. We were carrying precious goods to the city when a terrible sandstorm hit us.”

“A sandstorm?” asked Clever the jackal, moving closer to listen.

“Yes,” Slowpoke continued. “The wind was so strong, and the sand was flying everywhere. I couldn’t see anything! WHOOSH! WHOOSH! The storm separated me from my caravan, and I wandered for days trying to find them.”

Chatty fluttered down to a lower branch. “That sounds frightening! How did you end up in our forest?”

“I kept walking, hoping to find water and shelter,” Slowpoke explained. “Eventually, I found this beautiful forest, but now I don’t know how to get back to the desert or find my caravan friends.”

Chapter 4: A Kind Invitation

Simba’s heart was touched by Slowpoke’s sad story. Being a good and noble king, he couldn’t bear to see anyone lost and alone.

“My dear Slowpoke,” Simba said warmly, “you are welcome to stay in our forest as long as you need. We have plenty of fresh water, green grass, and safe places to rest.”

Slowpoke’s eyes widened with surprise and gratitude. “Really? You would let a stranger like me stay in your kingdom?”

“Of course!” Simba replied. “All creatures deserve kindness and help when they’re in trouble. Besides, I would enjoy having a new friend.”

Chatty nodded enthusiastically. “Yes! It would be wonderful to hear stories about the desert and the world beyond our forest!”

Clever the jackal also agreed, though he was always thinking practically. “And Slowpoke, with your height, you could help us reach fruits from the tallest trees!”

“I would be honored to help in any way I can,” Slowpoke said, feeling grateful tears in his eyes. “Thank you all so much for your kindness.”

And so, Slowpoke the camel became the newest member of their forest family.

Chapter 5: Happy Days Together

For many months, the four friends lived together happily in the forest. Each day brought new adventures and joy.

Slowpoke proved to be a wonderful addition to their group. With his long neck, he could easily reach the sweetest mangoes and coconuts from the highest branches.

“Here you go, friends!” Slowpoke would say, dropping delicious fruits down to his companions. “These mangoes are perfectly ripe!”

Chatty the crow was an excellent scout, flying high above the trees to spot any danger or interesting things happening in the forest.

“All clear from above!” Chatty would call. “And I can see a new family of deer drinking by the stream!”

Clever the jackal was great at solving problems and finding the best hunting spots for Simba.

“Your Majesty, I found fresh tracks near the watering hole,” Clever would report. “There should be good hunting there tonight.”

And Simba, being the brave king, protected them all and made sure every animal in the forest lived in peace.

The four friends would spend their evenings sharing stories under the stars. Slowpoke would tell them about life in the desert, while the others shared forest tales.

“In the desert,” Slowpoke would say, “the stars look so close you feel like you could touch them. And the sunrise over the sand dunes is the most beautiful sight in the world.”

“That sounds amazing!” the others would say, imagining the wonderful desert scenes.

Chapter 6: The Terrible Accident

One day, while the friends were exploring a new part of the forest, something terrible happened.

They were walking along a narrow path when suddenly, the ground gave way under Simba’s feet!

CRACK! CRASH! Before anyone could react, the mighty lion had fallen into a deep, hidden trap that hunters had dug long ago.

“SIMBA!” cried all his friends at once.

“Your Majesty! Are you hurt?” called Chatty, flying down to the edge of the pit.

From the bottom of the deep hole, Simba’s voice echoed up. “I’m alive, but I think my leg is badly injured! I can’t climb out!”

The trap was very deep – too deep for Simba to jump out of, and too steep for him to climb up the sides.

“Don’t worry, Your Majesty!” called Clever the jackal. “We’ll figure out how to get you out!”

But despite all their efforts – throwing down vines, trying to dig a ramp, and even Slowpoke lowering his long neck into the pit – nothing worked. The trap was simply too deep and well-made.

“What are we going to do?” worried Chatty, flapping his wings anxiously.

Chapter 7: Days of Struggle

Days passed, and Simba remained trapped in the pit. His friends stayed nearby, bringing him water by dropping it down in large leaves, but they couldn’t get him any solid food.

“I’m getting weaker,” Simba admitted sadly. “Without proper food, I don’t know how much longer I can last.”

This was a very serious problem. In the forest, when the king lion was strong and healthy, he could hunt for food and share with his friends when needed. But now, trapped and growing weak, Simba couldn’t help anyone – not even himself.

Slowpoke, Chatty, and Clever tried their best to find food for themselves, but it wasn’t easy. Slowpoke could eat grass and leaves, and Chatty could find insects and small creatures, but Clever the jackal needed more substantial food to stay healthy.

“We have to find a solution,” said Clever, though he was starting to look thin and worried. “If we don’t act soon, we might all be in serious trouble.”

As time went on, the situation became more and more desperate. The three friends were growing hungrier and more worried about their beloved king.

And that’s when Clever the jackal began to have a very different kind of thought – a dark and selfish thought that would test the true meaning of friendship.

Chapter 8: The Evil Plan

One evening, when Slowpoke had wandered off to find fresh grass and Chatty was roosting in a tree, Clever the jackal had a terrible idea.

“You know,” Clever whispered to Chatty when they were alone, “our situation is becoming quite desperate. Simba is getting weaker, and we’re all struggling to find enough food.”

“Yes, it’s very worrying,” agreed Chatty sadly. “Poor Simba must be so hungry down there.”

Clever looked around to make sure Slowpoke couldn’t hear them, then continued in a low voice. “I’ve been thinking… Slowpoke is very large, and he’s not really one of us forest animals anyway. He’s just a visitor who got lost.”

“What do you mean?” asked Chatty, though he was starting to feel uncomfortable about where this conversation was going.

“Well,” Clever said slyly, “if something happened to Slowpoke, there would be enough… food… to keep Simba strong and help him recover. And with Simba healthy again, he could hunt for more food for all of us.”

Chatty’s eyes widened in horror. “Clever! Are you suggesting what I think you’re suggesting? That’s terrible!”

“Think about it practically,” Clever argued. “Slowpoke is going to leave our forest eventually anyway, once he finds his way back to the desert. But Simba is our king forever. Shouldn’t we save our king’s life?”

“But… but Slowpoke is our friend!” Chatty protested. “He’s been kind to us, and Simba welcomed him with hospitality. We can’t just…”

“It’s for the greater good,” Clever insisted. “Sometimes tough decisions have to be made. Are you with me or not?”

Chapter 9: The Moment of Truth

Poor Chatty was torn between his loyalty to Simba and his friendship with Slowpoke. He spent the whole night thinking about Clever’s terrible suggestion.

The next morning, Clever approached him again. “Have you decided? Time is running out for Simba.”

Meanwhile, Slowpoke was innocently gathering the sweetest leaves he could find, planning to share them with his friends as he always did.

“Good morning, everyone!” Slowpoke called cheerfully as he approached with a mouthful of fresh greenery. “I found some wonderful lotus leaves by the stream! And look – I also found some honey that the bees dropped!”

He was always so kind and generous, thinking of others before himself.

“Slowpoke,” Clever said, putting on a false friendly voice, “could you come here for a moment? We need to discuss something important about rescuing Simba.”

Slowpoke immediately came over, eager to help. “Of course! I’ll do anything to help our king. What’s your plan?”

Clever glanced at Chatty, waiting to see if the crow would support his evil scheme.

This was the moment of truth. What would Chatty decide? Would he stay loyal to friendship and kindness, or would he let fear and hunger make him do something terrible?

Chatty looked at Slowpoke’s trusting, innocent face. He looked down at Simba in the pit. He looked at Clever’s expectant expression.

And then, suddenly, Chatty knew exactly what he had to do.

Chapter 10: The Right Choice

“NO!” Chatty cried out loudly. “I won’t be part of this evil plan, Clever! And Slowpoke, you need to know – Clever wants to hurt you to feed to Simba!”

Slowpoke gasped in shock and quickly stepped back. “What? Clever, is this true?”

Clever’s face twisted with anger at being exposed. “You foolish crow! Now you’ve ruined everything! How are we supposed to save Simba?”

“Not by betraying our friend!” Chatty said firmly, flying protectively near Slowpoke. “Simba would never want us to hurt an innocent friend to save him. That’s not the kind of king he is!”

From the pit below, Simba’s weak but clear voice called up: “Chatty is absolutely right! I would rather die with honor than live because my friends committed murder. What you suggested, Clever, goes against everything I believe in!”

Slowpoke looked hurt and confused. “But Clever, I thought we were friends. I’ve shared everything I had with you. Why would you want to harm me?”

“Because you’re not really one of us!” Clever snarled, his true selfish nature now showing. “You’re just a desert outsider!”

“That’s enough!” Simba roared from the pit, even though he was weak. “Clever, your hunger has made you forget what friendship means. True friends don’t betray each other, no matter how difficult things become!”

Chapter 11: Wisdom Prevails

Chatty flew down to the edge of the pit to speak with Simba. “Your Majesty, what should we do? We still need to find a way to rescue you, but we won’t hurt Slowpoke.”

Simba thought carefully, even in his weakened state. “My dear friends, there must be another way. Have we tried everything?”

Slowpoke, despite being hurt by Clever’s betrayal, stepped forward. “Your Majesty, I have an idea. What if I could find some humans from the nearby village? They have ropes and tools that might be strong enough to pull you out.”

“But that could be dangerous for you,” worried Chatty. “Humans might capture you or harm you.”

“I’m willing to take that risk,” Slowpoke said bravely. “King Simba showed me kindness when I was lost and alone. Now it’s my turn to help him, even if it means facing danger.”

Clever, feeling ashamed of his evil suggestion, spoke up quietly. “I… I could guide you to the village, Slowpoke. I know where the humans live. It’s the least I can do to make up for my terrible behavior.”

“You see?” called Simba from the pit. “This is how real problems are solved – with courage, sacrifice, and friendship, not with betrayal and violence!”

Chapter 12: The Rescue Mission

Despite his hurt feelings, Slowpoke agreed to let Clever guide him to the human village. Chatty flew overhead to scout for any dangers along the way.

“I’m truly sorry, Slowpoke,” Clever said as they walked. “Hunger and fear made me think terrible thoughts. You’ve been nothing but kind to us, and I repaid that kindness with betrayal.”

“I forgive you, Clever,” Slowpoke replied, though he was still sad. “But I hope you learned that friendship is more important than anything else.”

When they reached the village, Slowpoke took a deep breath and walked boldly toward the humans. The villagers were amazed to see a camel approaching them peacefully.

Using gestures and leading them back toward the forest, Slowpoke somehow managed to communicate that help was needed. The curious humans followed, bringing ropes and tools.

“Look!” called Chatty from above. “There’s an animal trapped in that pit!”

The kind-hearted villagers immediately understood the situation. They threw down strong ropes and, working together with Slowpoke pulling from above, they managed to lift the weak but grateful lion out of the trap.

“Thank you, my friends,” Simba said weakly as he lay on solid ground again. “And thank you, brave humans, for your kindness to animals in need.”

Chapter 13: Recovery and Reflection

The humans, amazed by the unusual friendship between the different animals, left them some food and water before returning to their village with a wonderful story to tell.

Over the following weeks, Simba slowly recovered his strength. During this time, the four friends had many important conversations about what had happened.

“I learned something very important,” Clever admitted to the group. “When we’re scared or desperate, it’s easy to make wrong choices. But true friendship means standing by each other even in the hardest times.”

“And I learned that sometimes the right choice is also the hardest choice,” added Chatty. “It would have been easier to stay quiet, but speaking up for what’s right was more important.”

Slowpoke, generous as always, said, “I learned that forgiveness is powerful. Even when someone hurts us, we can choose to forgive and help them become better.”

Simba nodded wisely. “And I learned that being a good leader means setting an example, even when we’re at our weakest. My friends showed more courage and wisdom than I ever could have asked for.”

“But there’s one more thing we all learned,” Simba continued. “We learned that our friendship is stronger than any challenge. When we work together with honesty and courage, we can overcome anything.”

Chapter 14: A Stronger Bond

From that day forward, the friendship between Simba, Chatty, Clever, and Slowpoke became even stronger than before. They had been tested by the worst circumstances and had chosen to do what was right.

Clever never again suggested hurting others to solve problems. Instead, he used his intelligence to find creative and fair solutions to difficulties.

Chatty continued to be brave and honest, always speaking up for what was right, even when it was difficult.

Slowpoke remained kind and generous, but he also learned to be more careful about trusting others too quickly.

And Simba became an even wiser king, knowing that true leadership means inspiring others to be their best selves, especially during tough times.

“You know,” Slowpoke said one evening as they watched the sunset together, “I came to this forest by accident, lost and afraid. But I found something more valuable than anything in my merchant caravan – I found true friends.”

“And we found out what we’re really made of,” added Chatty. “When things got hard, we discovered who we truly wanted to be.”

Clever nodded thoughtfully. “I almost made the worst mistake of my life. But because of your friendship, I learned to be better. Thank you for not giving up on me.”

“That’s what friends do,” Simba said with a warm smile. “We help each other grow, we forgive each other’s mistakes, and we stand together no matter what challenges come our way.”

Chapter 15: The New Beginning

Many months later, a caravan of merchants passed near the forest. Slowpoke recognized the voices of his old traveling companions!

“My friends!” he called out joyfully. “I thought I’d lost you forever!”

The merchants were overjoyed to see Slowpoke alive and well. “We searched for you for weeks!” they said. “We never gave up hope of finding you!”

Now Slowpoke had a choice to make. He could return to his old life of traveling the trade routes, or he could stay in the forest with his new friends.

“What will you choose?” asked Simba, though it was clear the decision made him sad.

Slowpoke thought carefully. “You know, I’ll always be grateful to my merchant friends, and I do miss traveling sometimes. But this forest has become my true home, and you three are my family now.”

“Really?” asked Chatty hopefully.

“Really,” Slowpoke confirmed. “I’ve learned that having friends who truly care about you is worth more than all the treasures in the world.”

The merchants understood and respected Slowpoke’s choice. They even offered to set up a small trading post nearby, so they could visit their old friend regularly.

And so, the four friends continued their life together in the forest, knowing that they had faced the ultimate test of friendship and emerged stronger than ever.

Every evening, as they sat together under the stars, they would remember the important lesson they had learned: that true friendship means choosing to do what’s right, even when it’s difficult, and that loyalty and kindness are the greatest treasures anyone can possess.

The End

Moral of the Story: True friendship is tested not in good times, but in times of difficulty and danger. Real friends choose loyalty, honesty, and kindness over personal gain, even when facing hardship. When we stay true to our values and support each other through challenges, our bonds become stronger and more meaningful.
