Ashadha Purnima Observed at Sarnath with Deep Devotion
As the full moon of Ashadha illuminated the historic site of Sarnath, the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC) joined forces with the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, and the Mahabodhi Society of India to commemorate Ashadha Purnima. This significant day marks the Dhammachakra Pravartana Divas, the occasion when Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon. The celebration, held at the revered Mulagandha Kuti Vihara, attracted monastics, scholars, and devotees from around the world, coinciding with the start of Varsha Vassa, the traditional monastic rains retreat.

The event commenced with a mindful parikrama, or circumambulation, around the Dhamek Stupa. Monks, nuns, and lay devotees participated in this silent procession, reflecting on the teachings of the Buddha as the sun set. The Dhamek Stupa, a symbol of the Buddha’s enduring legacy, stood majestically against the twilight sky. Following this, Ven. Summitananda Thero, the In-charge of Mulagandha Kuti Vihara, welcomed attendees and spoke about the profound silence and sanctity of Sarnath, a place that has preserved the Dharma for centuries.

Dieu Tri, a senior nun from Vietnam, recounted the recent Relic Exposition of the Buddha in Vietnam, where millions of devotees expressed their reverence. A short film presented by the IBC highlighted this spiritual journey, showcasing the emotional connection of Vietnamese followers to the sacred relics.

Ven. Wangchuk Dorjee Negi, Vice Chancellor of the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies, provided thoughtful reflections on the relationship between knowledge and practice in Dharma. He emphasized the symbolic significance of Ashadha Purnima, linking it to key events in the Buddha’s life, including his conception, first sermon, and the establishment of the monastic Sangha. Most Ven. Sumedha Thero, President of the Indo–Sri Lanka International Buddhist Association, expressed gratitude to the Indian government for selecting Sarnath as the focal point for this celebration. He highlighted the deep historical and spiritual ties between India and Sri Lanka, which have been nurtured over centuries through the shared teachings of the Buddha. This sentiment resonated with many attendees, reinforcing the significance of the occasion.

The event concluded with impactful closing remarks from Shartse Khensur Jangchup Choeden Rinpoche, Secretary General of the IBC.
