United States Conducts Airstrikes on Iran’s Nuclear Facilities

The recent U.S. military strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities have sparked grave concerns among global leaders, with United Nations Secretary-General Antรณnio Guterres labeling the situation a “perilous turn” for the already unstable region. During an emergency Security Council meeting, Guterres warned that the escalation of violence could lead to catastrophic consequences, urging for immediate diplomatic efforts to prevent further retaliation. He emphasized the need for protecting civilians and ensuring safe maritime navigation while calling for a return to serious negotiations regarding Iran’s nuclear program.
Escalation of Conflict
The military actions taken by the United States against Iran’s Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan nuclear facilities have been described as a “dangerous escalation” by Miroslav Jenฤa, Assistant Secretary-General for Europe, Central Asia, and the Americas. He expressed deep concern over the rapid deterioration of the situation, noting that shortly after the U.S. strikes, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched approximately 40 missiles at Israel. In response, Israel has conducted its own series of strikes against Iranian military targets, including locations in Tehran, Tabriz, and Yazd. The ongoing conflict has resulted in significant casualties, with Iran’s Ministry of Health reporting 430 deaths and over 3,500 injuries, primarily among civilians, due to Israeli attacks. Israeli authorities have also reported 25 fatalities and around 1,300 injuries among their citizens since the hostilities began.
Call for Diplomacy
Guterres and Jenฤa both underscored the urgent need for diplomacy to prevent further violence in the Middle East. They called on all member states to adhere to their obligations under the UN Charter and international law, emphasizing the importance of resolving disputes through peaceful means. Jenฤa highlighted the dire consequences of continued military confrontation, stating that the region cannot afford another violent conflict where civilians bear the brunt of the fighting. He reiterated the necessity for de-escalation, confidence-building measures, and a return to negotiations to address the nuclear issue with Iran.
Damage Assessment at Nuclear Sites
Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), reported visible damage at the Fordow nuclear site, indicating the use of ground-penetrating munitions by the United States. He noted that the IAEA is currently unable to assess the extent of the underground damage. Additional strikes were confirmed at the Isfahan nuclear site, affecting buildings associated with uranium conversion, while the Natanz enrichment facility also sustained damage. Despite these attacks, Iran has informed the IAEA that there has been no increase in off-site radiation levels at the impacted sites. Grossi reiterated the importance of maintaining communication with the IAEA and called for maximum restraint and a renewed commitment to diplomacy to avoid potential radioactive releases from armed attacks on nuclear facilities.
International Response and Future Outlook
The international community is closely monitoring the situation, with calls for the IAEA to deploy nuclear safety and security experts to Iran. Grossi emphasized that the proliferation of nuclear weapons poses a threat to global safety and that further military actions could undermine efforts to achieve a peaceful resolution. He urged member states to support diplomatic initiatives and to prevent the escalation of hostilities. As tensions rise, the focus remains on finding a credible and verifiable solution to the nuclear issue, which is essential for restoring trust and ensuring regional stability.
