Karima Mokhtar: The Beloved Matriarch of Egyptian Cinema

Karima Mokhtar (16 January 1934 โ€“ 12 January 2017), also knownasย  The โ€œMother of Egyptian Cinemaโ€ was known for depicting maternal characters with depth and humbleness. She was a prolific entertainer who starred in many films, TV shows, and plays throughout her career.

Life and Career

Karima was born on 16 January 1934, in Sahel Selim, Egypt. Although her parents initially disapproved of a career in acting, she decided to pursue her silver-screen dreams. Karima graduated with a bachelorโ€™s degree in theater from the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts before searching for work in the entertainment industry.

A natural and charismatic performer, Karima successfully auditioned to present on โ€œBaba Sharou,โ€ a childrenโ€™s radio program. This helped her land her first film role inย Thaman El-Horeyaย (The Price of Freedom). After starring inย Al-Hafeedย (The Grandson) as a young mother of seven children, Karima established her ability to depict maternal characters, which sheโ€™d soon become famous for.

Karima continued her success with films likeย Amira Hobi Anaย (Amira My Love) andย Al-Shaytan Ya’ezย (The Devil Preaches). She then explored other mediums like television and theater. Karima received acclaim for starring as a wife and mother dealing with familial turmoil in the playย El-Eyal Kebretย (The Kids Have Grown Up). Later in her career, she took on one of her most famous roles in the popular Egyptian soap operaย Yetraba Fi Ezo (May He Grow Up Prosperous). She died on 12 January 2017 at an age of 82.

Award and Legacy

She received numerous awards and recognitions for her contributions. Karima won Best Actress at the Cairo Arab Media Festival in 2007.Leaving behind a legacy of strong and sympathetic performances, Karima helped revolutionize the Egyptian film industry and paved the way for future generations of actresses. On 16 January 2023, Google Doodle celebrated Karima Mokhtar’s 89th Birthday.
