Shubman Gill’s Captaincy Debut in IND vs ENG 1st Test Reflects Promising Leadership

A new chapter in Indian Test cricket unfolded on Friday as Shubman Gill’s team showcased their dominance on the first day of the inaugural Test against England at Headingley, part of the Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy. After England’s captain Ben Stokes opted to bat first, India responded impressively, concluding the day at a remarkable 359/3—setting a record for their highest Day 1 total in Tests played in England. Leading the charge, Gill achieved an unbeaten 127, marking a significant milestone as only the fourth Indian to score a century in his first innings as Test captain. Alongside him, Yashasvi Jaiswal contributed a brilliant 101, while vice-captain Rishabh Pant added a steady 65, firmly establishing India’s control at the end of Day 1.
Debut Disappointment for Sai Sudharsan
All eyes were on debutant Sai Sudharsan, who faced a tough initiation into Test cricket. Receiving his cap from Cheteshwar Pujara, Sudharsan entered the match at No. 3 but was dismissed without scoring after just four balls. This unfortunate outcome made him the first Indian debutant since 2011 to leave the field without contributing to the score. His dismissal came at a critical moment, as it slightly dampened the promising start that India had forged with a 91-run opening partnership between KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal. After Sudharsan’s exit, India headed into lunch at 92/2, with questions emerging about the new middle order’s stability.
Yashasvi Jaiswal Continues Dream Run
Yashasvi Jaiswal reaffirmed his status as one of India’s most promising red-ball batting talents. The 23-year-old left-hander scored his fifth Test century, and notably his third against England, establishing a pattern of success in the opening Test of every overseas series he has participated in. Jaiswal’s innings of 101 off 159 balls included an impressive 16 boundaries and one six, showcasing a blend of aggression and caution. He began his innings with a fluent drive off Chris Woakes and built momentum throughout, forming a crucial 129-run partnership with Gill for the third wicket. This partnership not only steadied India after an early setback but also propelled them toward a commanding position as they took control of the match.
Captain Gill Matches Kohli’s Feat with Commanding Century
In his debut as Test captain, Shubman Gill made a strong impression, proving his capability to lead a new era for Indian cricket. He played a composed and authoritative innings, reaching an unbeaten 127 off 175 balls. This performance marked Gill’s sixth Test century and his third against England, underscoring his growing reputation. He achieved his fifty in just 56 balls, his fastest in Test cricket, and displayed remarkable skill with 14 boundaries. By scoring a century in his first innings as captain, Gill joined the ranks of Indian legends like Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, and Virat Kohli. At just 25 years and 285 days old, he also became the youngest Indian skipper to record a fifty on captaincy debut, showcasing a blend of poise and tactical astuteness.
Pant Adds Spark, India Finish Day 1 at 359/3
Rishabh Pant provided a late surge on Day 1, scoring a brisk 65 not out off 102 balls, which added significant momentum to India’s innings. His partnership with Gill remained unbroken at stumps, already contributing 138 runs for the fourth wicket. England’s bowlers, with the exception of Ben Stokes, who took 2 wickets for 43 runs, struggled to make an impact on the pitch. Brydon Carse claimed the only other wicket for England, while the rest of the bowling attack appeared ineffective against India’s disciplined batting display. With their total of 359/3, India not only set a new record for Day 1 in England but also achieved the highest score by any visiting team on the first day of a Test in England since 2003.
