India Approves 2,744 PMBJKs to Boost Rural Healthcare

The Pharmaceuticals & Medical Devices Bureau of India (PMBI) has granted initial approval for 2,744 Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) to establish Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Kendras (PMBJK). Out of these, 785 PACS have received drug licenses, while 716 have been assigned Store Codes, enabling them to operate as PMBJKs. This initiative aims to enhance access to affordable healthcare in rural areas across the country.

Affordable Medicines for Rural Communities

PACS functioning as PMBJKs are set to provide a wide range of healthcare products, including approximately 2,047 quality generic medicines and around 300 surgical items. The offerings encompass major therapeutic categories such as cardiovascular, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, anti-infective, anti-allergic, gastrointestinal medicines, and nutraceuticals. These Kendras are crucial in making healthcare more accessible, offering medicines at prices that are 50% to 90% lower than branded alternatives. This significant price reduction aims to alleviate the financial burden on rural citizens, ultimately improving their overall health and well-being.

Strengthening Financial Viability of PACS

The establishment of PMBJKs has not only improved healthcare access but has also diversified income streams for PACS, enhancing their financial sustainability. According to PMBI, PACS operating PMBJKs have collectively purchased medicines worth Rs. 4.9 Crore. This financial boost allows these societies to reinvest in cooperative activities, enhance services for their members, and play a more substantial role in rural economic development. By strengthening their financial viability, PACS can better serve their communities and contribute to local economies.

Ongoing Efforts to Expand PMBJK Network

To further increase the number of PACS operating PMBJKs, especially in underserved and remote areas, the initiative’s implementation is regularly assessed through meetings with States/UTs and PMBI. These discussions focus on ensuring effective progress and include efforts to simplify the application process, expedite approvals, and provide training programs for PACS staff on pharmacy operations. State governments are also encouraged to identify and support eligible PACS in launching PMBJKs, thereby enhancing rural healthcare access across the nation.
