5G Connectivity Now Available in 99.9% of Districts Nationwide
In a significant advancement for telecommunications across India, the Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development, Dr. Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, announced in the Rajya Sabha that 5G services have officially been rolled out in every state and union territory. This rollout ensures that 5G technology is now accessible in 99.9% of the districts nationwide, marking a crucial step forward in digital connectivity.
As of October 31, 2025, telecom service providers have installed an impressive total of 508,000 5G Base Transceiver Stations (BTSs) to enhance internet and mobile service, particularly in rural and urban locales. The government’s commitment to improving communication infrastructure aims to reduce call drops and bolster internet connectivity in areas that have historically been underserved.
Government Initiatives to Enhance Connectivity
The government is actively pursuing several initiatives designed to bridge the digital divide. Key projects include the BharatNet initiative, which provides broadband connectivity to Gram Panchayats and rural villages, aiming to bring high-speed internet access to remote areas. Additionally, a dedicated scheme targets mobile service provision in regions affected by Left Wing Extremism and in Aspirational Districts, ensuring even the most challenging areas receive connectivity.
To further enhance service quality, the government has launched the 4G Saturation scheme, which intends to deliver 4G mobile coverage to every uncovered village throughout the country. This plays a pivotal role in equipping rural communities with the technology necessary for growth and development.
Another important initiative is the introduction of the GatiShakti Sanchar portal and the Right of Way (RoW) Rules. These measures are designed to streamline permissions for the installation of telecom infrastructure, making it easier and faster for service providers to establish necessary installations. Along with this, the government is providing time-bound permissions for utilizing existing street furniture to install small cells and telecommunication lines, which will further enhance network capacity.
As a testament to the ongoing expansion of India’s telecom infrastructure, over 3.1 million BTSs have now been installed nationwide. These installations are a joint effort between private telecom service providers and state-led initiatives, highlighting a collaborative approach to enhancing connectivity. The shared usage of this telecom infrastructure is based on techno-commercial feasibility, promoting efficiency and sustainability in service delivery. With these initiatives, the government aims to foster a more connected nation, improving communication access for all citizens.
