His mother, Katherine Esther Jackson (née Scruse), played musical instruments and had aspirations of pursuing a career in country and western music. She also worked part-time at Sears. Jackson’s mother was a member of Jehovah’s Witnesses. His father, Joseph Walter “Joe” Jackson, a former boxer, supplemented the family’s income by working as a crane operator at US Steel. He was also a guitarist for a local rhythm and blues band called The Falcons. Michael’s family lineage included a diverse background; his great-grandfather, July “Jack” Gale, served as a US Army scout, and family stories suggested he had Native American roots.
Growing up, Michael shared his home with three sisters (Rebbie, La Toya, and Janet) and five brothers (Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, and Randy). Tragically, his brother Marlon’s twin, Brandon, passed away shortly after birth.
