Ministry of Coal Hosts Star Rating Awards and Consultation for Coal Sector Growth
The Ministry of Coal organized a major event today in New Delhi that included the Star Rating Awards Ceremony for Coal and Lignite Mines, a Stakeholder Consultation on Mine Developers cum Operators (MDOs), and the release of the Coal Directory of India. The event focused on recognizing the top-performing coal and lignite mines, discussing challenges faced by MDOs, and sharing updates on the coal industry.
Union Minister of Coal and Mines, Shri G. Kishan Reddy, served as the Chief Guest, while Union Minister of State for Coal and Mines, Shri Satish Chandra Dubey, was the Guest of Honour.
Addressing Stakeholder Challenges
During the event, Shri G. Kishan Reddy led a stakeholder consultation with MDOs. This session allowed MDOs to discuss important issues they face with key government ministries like the Ministry of Power, Ministry of Railways, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MOEF&CC), and the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS). Representatives from these ministries joined the discussion, shared their views, and assured their full support to help overcome obstacles in coal production and dispatch. This marked a big step toward making coal sector operations smoother.
Shri Reddy emphasized how important it is for MDOs to work closely with these ministries to address any challenges. He stressed the need to improve inter-ministerial coordination to increase coal production and meet the growing demand for energy.
Shri G. Kishan Reddy’s Keynote Speech
In his keynote address, Shri G. Kishan Reddy highlighted the crucial role that MDOs play in boosting coal production in India. He praised the hard work of MDOs, noting their efforts help the country achieve its production goals. The Minister also pointed out that coal will continue to be a major source of energy in the years ahead, and the cooperation between the state governments and MDOs will be key to meeting the rising demand.
Shri Reddy also linked the successful efforts of MDOs to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of achieving Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) in the coal sector. He noted that India can reduce its reliance on imported coal by boosting domestic production, a move that will help strengthen the country’s economy.
The Minister also spoke about the welfare of mine workers and their families, acknowledging the sacrifices made by those who give up their land for mining. He emphasized the need for humane treatment of workers, especially regarding their safety and well-being.
Responsible Coal Mining Practices
Shri Reddy highlighted the importance of improving domestic coal production and reducing imports. He also stressed the need for scientific mine closures and urged the industry to ensure that no mine remains unclosed in the next 3-4 years. India aims to become a global leader in responsible mine closure practices, setting a benchmark for others to follow.
He concluded by reinforcing the Ministry’s commitment to responsible mining practices, including worker safety and environmental standards. The Minister congratulated all the awardees and promised to continue working closely with them to achieve the country’s coal production goals.
