xAI Launches Grok 3 API for Developers

Elon Musk’s xAI has unveiled a new application programming interface (API) for its Grok 3 AI model, expanding access for developers. Previously available only to end consumers through the X platform and mobile apps, the Grok 3 model can now be utilized to create applications and software. This release marks a significant step in making advanced AI capabilities more accessible to developers.
xAI Releases Grok 3 API, Reveals Pricing
On Thursday, xAI announced the launch of its Grok 3 API, which is designed to empower developers with access to its advanced AI models. The API documentation provides comprehensive details, including model overviews and pricing information, essential for developers looking to leverage these tools. The API includes four large language models (LLMs): Grok 3, Grok 3 mini, and two faster variants of these models, all available in beta.
The Grok 3 model serves as the flagship AI offering from xAI, powering the chatbot on X and various applications. It is particularly useful for enterprise applications, including data extraction, coding, and text summarization. In contrast, the Grok 3 mini is a lightweight model designed for logic-based tasks that do not require extensive domain knowledge. This model features native reasoning capabilities, making it suitable for simpler applications.
Additionally, the API includes Grok 3 Fast beta and Grok 3 mini Fast beta models. These faster variants utilize the same underlying technology as their standard counterparts but are hosted on specialized infrastructure, resulting in significantly quicker response times. However, this enhanced speed comes at a higher cost, reflected in the pricing structure for input and output tokens.
Pricing Structure for Developers
The pricing for the Grok 3 model is set at $3 (approximately Rs. 260) per million input tokens and $15 (around Rs. 1,300) per million output tokens. For the faster variant, developers will pay $5 (about Rs. 430) per million input tokens and $25 (approximately Rs. 2,150) per million output tokens. In comparison, the Grok 3 mini model is more affordable, priced at $0.30 (roughly Rs. 25) for every million input tokens and $0.50 (about Rs. 43) for output tokens. The Grok 3 mini Fast model costs $0.60 (approximately Rs. 51) for input and $4 (around Rs. 344) for output tokens.
It is important to note that these AI models are text-only and do not generate images, although they can accept images as input. Furthermore, the API version of Grok 3 operates independently of the Internet, relying solely on its pre-training datasets for functionality. This ensures that developers can utilize the models effectively while understanding their limitations.
