World Elephant Day 2025 to be Celebrated in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu on August 12

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) is set to host the World Elephant Day celebration on August 12 in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, in partnership with the Tamil Nadu Forest Department. This annual event aims to reinforce global efforts to conserve elephants, one of the planet’s most cherished species, and to enhance strategies for their long-term survival. With India housing nearly 60% of the world’s wild elephant population, the event will gather experts and policymakers to discuss conservation and human-elephant conflict resolution.

Significance of World Elephant Day

World Elephant Day is a crucial occasion that highlights the importance of elephant conservation worldwide. Elephants are not only vital to biodiversity but also hold significant cultural value in many societies, including India, where they are recognized as the National Heritage Animal. The upcoming celebration in Coimbatore will serve as a platform for various stakeholders, including foresters, wildlife experts, and civil society representatives, to share insights and strategies for protecting these majestic creatures. The event underscores India’s commitment to balancing human welfare with wildlife conservation, showcasing the country’s robust legal frameworks and public support for elephant protection.

Focus on Human-Elephant Conflict

A key component of the World Elephant Day celebration will be a focused workshop addressing Human-Elephant Conflict (HEC). This workshop aims to facilitate discussions among elephant range states about the challenges they face in achieving coexistence with elephants. As incidents of elephants entering human settlements in search of food and water have increased, innovative solutions are necessary. The workshop will explore various strategies, including habitat management, corridor maintenance, and community engagement, to mitigate conflicts and promote safety for both humans and elephants. This initiative aligns with Project Elephant, which emphasizes community involvement and scientific approaches to conservation.

Engaging the Next Generation

In addition to the workshop, a nationwide awareness program will be launched, targeting approximately 12 lakh school children across 5,000 schools. This initiative aims to educate young people about the importance of elephant conservation and foster a sense of responsibility towards wildlife protection. By engaging the next generation, the program seeks to create a culture of conservation that extends beyond the event itself. The involvement of schools highlights the commitment to raising awareness and ensuring that future generations understand the significance of preserving elephants and their habitats.

Government Participation and Collaboration

The World Elephant Day celebration will be inaugurated by Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Bhupender Yadav, alongside Union Minister of State Shri Kriti Vardhan Singh and Thiru R. S. Rajakannappan, the Tamil Nadu Minister for Forests and Khadi. Senior officials from MoEF&CC, the Tamil Nadu Forest Department, and other relevant ministries will also participate in the event. This collaboration reflects a unified approach to addressing the challenges of elephant conservation and human-elephant coexistence. By bringing together various stakeholders, the event aims to foster dialogue and cooperation, ultimately contributing to the long-term survival of elephants in India.
