The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID) celebrates World AIDS Vaccine Day or HIV Virus Awareness Day. On May 18, we commemorate a speech made by then-US President Bill Clinton. As science and technology advance, he plans to set new goals for developing a vaccine within the next decade.

To commemorate the first anniversary of Clinton’s speech, the first World AIDS Vaccine Day was celebrated in 1998. It is on this day every year that communities around the world hold a variety of activities to raise awareness about vaccines, and preventive care, and to educate the public.
