Women in Indian Army

 

The number of women in the medical and non-medical cadres of the Indian Army are as follows:

  • The total number of women in Indian Army medical cadres, such as 01st July 2023:
  • Army Medical Corps (AMC) – 1,212
  • Army Dental Corps (ADC) – 168
  • Military Nursing Service (MNS) – 3,841
  • The total number of female officers in the Indian Army (excluding AMC, ADC and MNS) as of 1 January 2023 is 1,733.

The following are the major initiatives to increase the number of women in the Indian Army:

  • 20 vacancies per year for female army cadets have been filled in the National Defense Academy, Pune as of July 2022.
  • The Short Service Commission has 90 vacancies for women, including 10 additional vacancies increased as of June 2023.
  • Approval has been given, as of March 2023, for the placement of female officers in the following branches:
  • artillery unit.
  • Comeback and Veterinary Corps.
  • The entry of female officers as pilots into Army Aviation began as of June 2021.
  • Conscription of women as other ranks in Indian Army Military Police Force started from 2019.

This information was given today by Raksha Rajya Mantri Shri Ajay Bhatt in a written reply to Shri Sandosh Kumar P in Rajya Sabha.
