WHO Responds to Gaza Crisis with Urgent Health Initiatives

On January 19, 2025, the World Health Organization (WHO) expressed its support for a ceasefire in Gaza, along with a deal for the release of hostages and prisoners. This development brings a glimmer of hope to millions affected by the ongoing conflict. However, the health challenges facing the region are staggering. With extensive destruction of healthcare facilities and a significant number of casualties, the need for immediate action is critical. The WHO, alongside various UN health partners, is preparing to address these urgent health needs and restore the healthcare system in Gaza.

The Scale of Health Challenges in Gaza

The health crisis in Gaza is dire. The conflict has led to the deaths of over 46,600 people and injured more than 110,000. These numbers may not fully capture the extent of the tragedy, as many injuries and fatalities go unreported. The healthcare infrastructure is in shambles, with only half of Gaza’s 36 hospitals partially operational. Most hospitals have suffered damage, and only 38% of primary healthcare centers are functional.

The situation is compounded by the fact that approximately 30,000 individuals face life-altering injuries that require long-term rehabilitation. Access to specialized healthcare is severely limited, and medical evacuations for urgent cases are painfully slow. The risk of infectious diseases has surged, while malnutrition rates are climbing, raising fears of famine. The breakdown of public order, exacerbated by the presence of armed gangs, adds another layer of complexity to an already critical situation.

WHO’s Comprehensive Response Plan

In light of the immense health needs, the WHO is mobilizing resources and planning a comprehensive response. The organization aims to implement a 60-day plan focused on restoring and expanding the healthcare system. Key areas of focus will include trauma and emergency care, primary healthcare, child health, and mental health services.

To achieve these goals, WHO emphasizes the need for significant funding and international support. The organization is prepared to work closely with UN partners, including UNFPA, UNICEF, and UNRWA, to coordinate efforts. However, for these initiatives to succeed, security obstacles must be addressed. WHO requires unhindered access to the population across Gaza, allowing for the delivery of essential supplies and services.

Immediate Actions and Future Plans

WHO’s immediate actions include assessing and rehabilitating damaged health facilities in high-need areas. Efforts are underway to increase bed capacity in hospitals across northern and southern Gaza. The organization is also focused on hiring and redistributing national health workers while deploying international health professionals to fill gaps in care.

Additionally, WHO plans to integrate prefabricated clinics and hospitals with existing facilities to enhance service delivery in underserved areas. Strengthening referral processes for critical care within Gaza and facilitating cross-border medical evacuations are also priorities. Given the rising levels of malnutrition and disease outbreaks, WHO is collaborating with partners to expand feeding programs for infants and young children, enhance immunization efforts, and improve disease surveillance systems.

Call for Continued Commitment to Peace

As the WHO ramps up its operations, it calls on all parties involved to uphold the ceasefire agreement fully. A political solution is essential for addressing the ongoing crisis in the occupied Palestinian territory. Lasting peace can only be achieved through sustained commitment from all stakeholders. The health of millions hangs in the balance, and immediate action is necessary to restore hope and stability in Gaza.
