Wheat Production for 2025-26: Resilience Amid Challenges
The latest updates on wheat production for the 2025-26 season reveal a scenario marked by resilience, despite facing various climatic challenges. While some adverse weather conditions presented hurdles, farmers’ proactive measures have fostered a cautiously optimistic outlook for the crop’s overall yield and quality.
Wheat cultivation occurred over approximately 33.4 million hectares this season, with no significant reports of diseases or insect infestations affecting the crop. An early and timely sowing approach has allowed farmers to expand the sown area compared to last year, which is a positive sign for production levels.
Weather Challenges and Mitigating Factors
However, farmers did contend with some significant challenges during the growing season. Notably, anomalously high temperatures in February subjected the crop to heat stress, impacting the duration of grain filling and consequently, the yield. Additionally, areas that experienced unexpected rainfall and hailstorms closer to harvest faced local damage, affecting grain quality and final yield.
Despite these challenges, several compensatory factors contribute to an overall promising production forecast. A lack of crop-vexing pests and diseases, coupled with minimal weed infestation during critical growth phases, has supported crops’ health. Moreover, higher rates of early sowing have helped the plants avoid the worst impacts of terminal heat during grain filling.
The increase of around 0.6 million hectares of additional planting is also expected to help buffer against localized losses. Furthermore, the push for adopting high-yielding, climate-resilient, and disease-resistant cultivars is enhancing the sector’s ability to withstand climatic adversities.
Procurement and Production Insights
Procurement trends offer a further glimpse into India’s wheat landscape. In Haryana, the wheat arrival has notably exceeded the government’s procurement target of 75 LMT, with 56.13 LMT successfully purchased—this reflects an increase of approximately 9 LMT compared to last year. In Madhya Pradesh, high production estimates prompted a revision of the initial procurement goal from 78 LMT to 100 LMT. Meanwhile, Maharashtra’s wheat production is projected at around 22.90 Lakh Tonnes, showcasing a steady upward trend as the state benefits from consistent inflows from key regions.
