WhatsApp Unveils Exciting New AI Features

WhatsApp for Android is set to enhance user interaction with two innovative artificial intelligence (AI) features. The instant messaging platform is reportedly developing an AI-powered Rewrite feature that can transform messages into various styles and proofread them before sending. Additionally, a two-way live voice chat feature for Meta AI is in the works, promising a hands-free experience for users engaging with the chatbot.
AI-Powered Rewrite Feature on the Horizon
According to a report from Android Authority, WhatsApp is preparing to roll out a text-rewriting feature driven by AI. This discovery was made during an APK teardown of WhatsApp for Android version 2.25.8.5. Although the feature is not yet visible to users, its presence in the app’s code suggests that it is in development.
The AI Rewrite feature is designed to appear as a floating action button (FAB) with a pencil icon, located just above the Send button. This button will activate once a user types a message in either individual or group chats. After entering a few words, users can click the pencil icon to access a text editor, where they can choose from various rewriting options.
Reportedly, the options available include styles such as Funny, Proofread, Puns, Rephrase, Sarcastic, Shorter, Spooky, and Supportive. The Proofread option aims to correct spelling and grammatical errors, while the other styles modify the tone of the message, allowing for a more personalized communication experience.
Two-Way Voice Chat Feature for Meta AI
In a separate development, WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo has indicated that the messaging app is also working on a new enhancement for Meta AI. Currently, users can engage in text-based conversations with the AI, ask questions, and even share prompts as voice messages. However, the ability to have a two-way voice chat with the AI has not yet been available.
This may soon change, as WABetaInfo discovered a new call-like interface for Meta AI in the latest WhatsApp beta version 2.25.8.7. Although this feature is still under development and not accessible to beta testers, its potential is exciting for users looking for more interactive experiences.
Based on shared screenshots, the Meta AI interface is expected to initiate a call-like session automatically once the feature is live. Users will have the flexibility to switch to text-only mode or allow the AI to respond verbally while they send text messages. This two-way voice conversation feature is anticipated to function similarly to Gemini Live.
Enhanced User Experience and Future Prospects
WABetaInfo reports that users will be able to maintain conversations even when the app runs in the background, allowing them to switch to other applications seamlessly. A mute button will also be included, enabling users to silence audio in noisy environments. Additionally, users will have the option to end the call at any time, enhancing control over their interactions. In September 2024, WhatsApp introduced the Meta AI Voice Chat feature featuring celebrity voices, which was primarily a text-to-speech enhancement. It remains unclear whether the new voice chat feature will be a redesign of this previous offering or if it will provide a more human-like voice interaction experience. As these features are still in development, users eagerly await further updates from WhatsApp.
