WhatsApp Introduces Voice Messaging for Missed Calls
WhatsApp is set to enhance its calling features by introducing a new option that allows users to leave voice messages after missed calls. This functionality, reminiscent of traditional voicemail systems, aims to streamline communication for users who may not be able to answer calls. Currently, this feature is being rolled out exclusively for iOS devices, with no timeline yet provided for its availability on Android. Alongside this update, WhatsApp is also revamping its Calls tab to improve user experience.
New Voice Messaging Feature
WhatsApp has begun implementing a feature that enables users to record and send voice messages when their calls go unanswered. This new option, labeled as the ‘Record voice message’ button, appears directly on the call screen. This innovation eliminates the need for users to end a call, navigate to the chat window, and manually send an audio note. Instead, users can quickly communicate their message, making it easier for recipients to understand the purpose of the call without waiting for a text message. Reports indicate that WhatsApp is also working on a similar feature for video calls, allowing users to send short video messages if a video call is not answered.
Revamped Calls Tab
In addition to the voice messaging feature, WhatsApp is reorganizing its Calls tab to create a more user-friendly interface. The updated design consolidates voice and video call tools into a unified call hub. This new layout features four primary options at the top: a Call button for initiating individual or group calls with up to 31 participants, a Scheduling button for planning calls, a Keypad button for dialing numbers directly through WhatsApp, and a Favourites section for quick access to frequently contacted numbers. This overhaul aims to streamline how users manage their calls within the app.
Gradual Rollout and Future Updates
WhatsApp has announced that the new voice messaging feature and the updated Calls tab will be rolled out gradually. As a result, some users may need to wait before these tools become available on their devices. The company has not specified a timeline for when Android users can expect to receive the voice messaging feature. This gradual rollout approach is typical for WhatsApp, as it allows the company to monitor performance and user feedback before a full-scale launch.
Regulatory Changes in India
In related news, the Government of India is preparing to implement a regulation that will require messaging apps, including WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal, to remain linked to an active SIM card on the device. Officials believe this measure will enhance digital safety by closing loopholes that cybercriminals exploit for large-scale fraud. The directive has garnered mixed reactions, with telecom operators supporting the initiative, while digital platforms have expressed concerns and called for a review of the implementation timeline.
