WhatsApp Introduces AI-Driven Message Summarization and Chat Wallpapers

WhatsApp is making strides in enhancing user privacy and experience with the introduction of its new cloud technology, Private Processing, designed for AI features. The messaging platform is currently developing several innovative tools, including an AI-powered message summarization feature and a wallpaper generator. Additionally, WhatsApp has begun testing a new feature that allows users to add prompts to their status updates, further enriching user interaction on the platform.
AI-Powered Message Summarization in Development
Feature tracker WABetaInfo has identified two promising AI-driven features in the latest beta versions of WhatsApp for Android. One of these is the message summarization tool, which aims to assist users in catching up on conversations after receiving multiple messages. Although this feature was detected in WhatsApp beta version 2.25.15.12, it is not yet available for beta testers to experiment with.
When implemented, users will find a button labeled Summarise with Meta AI positioned above their latest unread messages. This feature will send a request to Meta’s servers, where the messages will be processed using the newly introduced Private Processing technology. Importantly, this process is designed to maintain the integrity of end-to-end encryption, ensuring that user privacy remains intact.
In addition to message summarization, WhatsApp is also developing an AI-powered wallpaper generator. This feature will allow users to create custom wallpapers by entering prompts, similar to existing functionalities in chat. A screenshot shared by a blogger reveals a new Create with AI option in the Wallpaper section of the app’s settings, indicating that users will have the ability to generate images and set them as their chat backgrounds. Furthermore, users will be able to refine their prompts to explore a wider range of creative options.
New Status Update Features for Beta Testers
While the AI features are still under development, WhatsApp has rolled out a new capability for beta testers that enhances the status update experience. Users who have updated to WhatsApp for iOS version 25.14.77 or WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.25.15.13 can now access themed prompts for their status updates.
These prompts are already familiar to users of other Meta applications, such as Instagram and Facebook, where they facilitate interactive engagement. For instance, users can create a collage of their favorite photos from a specific month and share it with a prompt that includes an Add Yours button. This feature encourages followers to participate by uploading their own similar status updates, fostering a sense of community and interaction among users.
