WhatsApp Becomes Default Calling App on iOS

WhatsApp has launched a significant update for its iOS app, allowing users to set it as their default application for calls and messages. This feature, which was initially available in a beta version, is now accessible to all iOS users. The update enhances the functionality introduced by Apple in its iOS 18.2 update, which allowed users to change their default calling and messaging apps.

Setting WhatsApp as the Default App

The latest version of WhatsApp for iOS, 25.8.74, introduces the option to select WhatsApp as the default app for both calls and messages. Users can now choose between FaceTime, Phone, and WhatsApp when setting their default calling application. Similarly, WhatsApp is now available as an alternative to the built-in Messages app for messaging purposes.

To make WhatsApp the default app for calls, users should go to the Settings menu, select Default Apps, and then choose Calling. From there, they can select WhatsApp. The same process applies for setting WhatsApp as the default messaging app by navigating to Messaging and selecting WhatsApp. Once configured, any calls initiated from web pages or other applications will automatically route through WhatsApp, streamlining the user experience.

From Beta to Widespread Availability

This feature was first identified in the beta version of WhatsApp for iOS 25.8.10.74, which was limited to users enrolled in Apple’s TestFlight program. Following successful testing, the feature has now been rolled out to all users with the latest update, which can be downloaded from the App Store. This rollout signifies a shift in how users can interact with their devices, as it allows them to bypass Apple’s default apps for essential functions like calling and messaging.

By enabling WhatsApp as the default app, users can enjoy a more seamless experience without the need to manually select the app each time they make a call or send a message. This enhancement is expected to improve user satisfaction and engagement with the platform.

Implications for iOS Users

The introduction of WhatsApp as a default app marks a notable change in the iOS ecosystem, where users have traditionally been limited to Apple’s native applications for basic communication tasks. With this update, WhatsApp users can now enjoy greater flexibility and convenience in their daily interactions.

This change not only enhances the functionality of the app but also reflects a growing trend towards user customization in mobile operating systems. As users increasingly seek personalized experiences, features like this are likely to become more common. The ability to set preferred apps for calls and messages empowers users to tailor their devices to better suit their needs, ultimately leading to a more satisfying user experience.
