WAVEX 2025, a prominent startup initiative under the World Audio-Visual Entertainment Summit (WAVES), is currently taking place in Mumbai, showcasing a blend of innovation, entrepreneurship, and investment in the media and entertainment (M&E) sector. The event aims to provide a national platform for startups to scale their ideas, with significant participation from industry leaders and investors. With over a thousand applications received, the initiative has already facilitated direct pitches to investors, highlighting its potential to transform the startup landscape in India.
Overview of WAVEX 2025
WAVEX 2025 is designed to nurture startups within the M&E space, offering them a unique opportunity to present their ideas to potential investors. Shri Ashutosh Mohle, Joint Director at the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, emphasized the initiative’s vision of fostering innovation and entrepreneurship. The event has attracted significant attention, with Sandeep Jhingran, Chief Growth Officer of the Internet and Mobile Association of India, noting that more than thirty startups pitched directly to investors, and many are already engaged in discussions about funding. This level of engagement underscores the importance of focused initiatives for M&E startups, which often face challenges in securing investment.
Investor Perspectives
The event also provided a platform for investors to share their insights on the evolving startup ecosystem. Shri Rajesh Joshi from Warmup Ventures reflected on his journey from startup founder to investor, expressing enthusiasm for the current wave of innovation. He mentioned that his firm is currently in talks with eleven startups, showcasing the growing interest in the M&E sector. Additionally, Shri Mustafa Harnesswala, Founder of CABIL, pointed out the traditional hesitance to invest in media and entertainment. He noted that WAVES is changing this mindset and is working on establishing a dedicated angel network for M&E startups, which could enhance funding opportunities and foster international collaborations.
Challenges and Opportunities
During the event, panelists addressed various challenges faced by startups in the M&E sector. One notable concern raised was the limited representation of women entrepreneurs. Sandeep Jhingran acknowledged this issue and expressed a commitment to improving gender diversity in future editions of WAVEX. The discussions also highlighted the need for effective monetization strategies for content creators, with Mustafa Harnesswala emphasizing that initiatives like WAVES are crucial in bridging this gap. The event format allowed thirty startups to engage in one-on-one pitching sessions over two days, providing them with valuable exposure and feedback from industry experts.
The Future of M&E Startups
WAVEX 2025 is positioning itself as a transformative force in the startup ecosystem for the M&E sector.
