WAVES Animation Bazaar and 8th Edition of IndiaJoy 2025 Inaugurated in Hyderabad
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has announced the establishment of a regional center for the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies (IICT) in Hyderabad. This initiative aims to bolster the gaming, animation, and digital entertainment sectors in the region. During the WAVES Animation Bazaar and IndiaJoy 2025 event, Secretary Sanjay Jaju emphasized Hyderabad’s growing role as a hub for the Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, and Comics (AVGC) ecosystem, which is vital for India’s creative economy.
Hyderabad’s Emerging Role in Creative Technologies
Sanjay Jaju, Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, revealed plans for the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies (IICT) to establish a campus in Hyderabad. This center will be part of a nationwide initiative aimed at enhancing the gaming, animation, and digital entertainment industries. Speaking at the WAVES Animation Bazaar and IndiaJoy 2025, Jaju highlighted the significance of this development for the region. He noted that the IICT will be the first of its kind in India, marking a significant step towards fostering innovation and creativity in these sectors.
Hyderabad has been recognized for its contributions to the AVGC sector, with the local film industry playing a crucial role in this growth. Jaju pointed out that the Telangana Government has been proactive in promoting these industries, further solidifying Hyderabad’s status as a key player in India’s creative landscape. The establishment of the IICT is expected to attract talent and investment, thereby enhancing the overall ecosystem for creative technologies in the region.
WAVES Initiative and Its Impact on Indian Cinema
The WAVES initiative, conceptualized by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aims to position India as a global leader in creativity and digital innovation. Jaju emphasized that South India, particularly Hyderabad, is pivotal in driving advancements in Indian cinema and creative technology. He noted that many successful pan-India films have been produced in Hyderabad, supported by state-of-the-art studios and a conducive policy environment that fosters innovation.
Jaju compared the potential impact of the WAVES initiative on the film industry to the transformative effect of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on cricket. He believes that by integrating creativity with technology, the WAVES initiative will revolutionize the Indian film landscape, creating a global platform for collaboration and innovation. This initiative aims to enhance the quality of Indian cinema and expand its reach on the international stage.
Collaboration and Support for Startups
During the event, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the IICT and T-Hub to promote startup incubation and innovation within the media and entertainment sector. This partnership aims to provide essential support to emerging startups and young creators, ensuring they have access to market opportunities and exposure at significant industry events.
The expo at IndiaJoy also showcased various startups incubated under the WAVEX initiative, along with intellectual properties developed by winners of the Create in India Challenge Season 1. These initiatives are designed to empower young creators and facilitate their entry into the competitive media and entertainment landscape. Additionally, the WAVES Animation Bazaar was launched as a physical content marketplace, connecting content creators with buyers and OTT platforms, thereby enabling creators to monetize their work effectively.
Future Prospects and Industry Engagement
Sanjay Jaju also chaired the IFFI Round Table, where he announced Japan as the partner country for IFFI 2025. He reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to combating piracy in Indian cinema and introduced a new system for applying for multilingual film certification, aiming to streamline the process for filmmakers.
The WAVES Animation Bazaar and IndiaJoy 2025 were organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, showcasing India’s creative economy across various sectors, including films, e-sports, VFX, animation, and comics. The event attracted notable figures from the industry, including Telangana’s IT Minister, Shri Duddilla Sridhar Babu, and prominent film producers and actors. This gathering underscores the collaborative efforts being made to enhance the media and entertainment landscape in India, particularly in Hyderabad.
