Vivo’s Upcoming Mixed Reality Headset

Vivo, the Chinese technology giant, has announced plans to launch a mixed reality (MR) headset next year. This revelation came during an event held on Tuesday, where the company hinted at its ambition to enter the competitive wearable market. The new headset is expected to rival established products like the Apple Vision Pro and Samsung’s Project Moohan, which was unveiled earlier this month. While specific details about the headset remain scarce, Vivo aims to introduce its first prototype by the second half of 2025, setting the stage for an exciting new chapter in immersive technology.

Vivo Mixed Reality Headset Launch

The news about Vivo’s mixed reality headset was shared by a well-known tipster, Digital Chat Station, on the Chinese social media platform Weibo. According to the tipster, the Vivo MR headset will feature capabilities similar to the Apple Vision Pro. However, there are expectations that Vivo’s offering may surpass Apple’s device in terms of features and performance. This could potentially position Vivo as a strong competitor in the mixed reality space.

The first prototype of the headset is expected to be available by September. Following its release, the device will undergo “high-fidelity prototype experiences” in various cities across China. This testing phase will allow Vivo to gather valuable feedback and refine the product before its official launch. However, the exact launch date for the MR headset remains uncertain. A Vivo executive indicated that the timing of the launch will depend on the readiness of supporting content ecosystems, which are crucial for the headset’s success.

This announcement builds on previous confirmations regarding the development of the MR headset. At the Vivo Imaging Conference held in China in July, Yu Meng, Vice President of Imaging at Vivo, emphasized the company’s commitment to launching the device in 2025. As the tech landscape evolves, Vivo’s entry into the mixed reality market could significantly impact consumer choices and industry standards.

OS for XR Devices

In a related development, Google recently unveiled a new operating system designed for extended reality (XR) devices. XR is an umbrella term that includes augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR). Google’s new Android XR OS aims to enhance user experiences by integrating features that leverage artificial intelligence (AI), AR, and VR technologies.

One of the standout features of the Android XR OS is its integration with the Gemini AI assistant. This assistant will allow users to engage in conversations and ask questions about objects and locations within their field of view. This interactive capability could significantly enhance the usability of XR devices, making them more intuitive and user-friendly. Additionally, the OS will support the Circle to Search feature, which is already available on select Android phones. This feature enables users to perform visual lookups with simple gestures, further bridging the gap between the digital and physical worlds.

Google has made the first developer preview of Android XR available to developers. This early access will enable them to start creating apps and games tailored for upcoming devices powered by this innovative operating system. As the XR landscape continues to evolve, the collaboration between hardware manufacturers like Vivo and software developers like Google will be crucial in shaping the future of immersive technology.
