Virat Kohli’s Return to Chinnaswamy Postponed as Vijay Hazare Matches Shift to CoE

Virat Kohli’s highly anticipated return to the M Chinnaswamy Stadium has been postponed after Bengaluru city police denied permission for the Vijay Hazare Trophy match between Delhi and Andhra. Kohli, who arrived in Bengaluru on Monday night, was set to play in two matches at the venue, which were moved from the KSCA Alur Stadium due to crowd concerns. The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has now arranged for the matches to take place at the BCCI Centre of Excellence, which has three grounds, following an inspection that deemed the Chinnaswamy Stadium unsuitable for hosting events.

KSCA’s Backup Plan Activated

The Karnataka State Cricket Association quickly sought alternative arrangements after the Bengaluru city police rejected their request to hold matches at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. The matches will now be played at the BCCI Centre of Excellence, which is equipped with three grounds. This decision comes after a committee, including the Bengaluru city police commissioner and officials from various departments, inspected the Chinnaswamy Stadium. They concluded that the venue lacked the necessary facilities to host matches safely. City police commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh confirmed that the KSCA’s request was denied until the required improvements are made.

The decision to move the matches was also influenced by security concerns, particularly with the upcoming Christmas festivities in the Central Business District. The committee’s findings were submitted to Maheshwar Rao, the commissioner of the Greater Bengaluru Authority, who leads the panel overseeing the venue’s safety. The matches will now take place behind closed doors at the Centre of Excellence, ensuring that no spectators will be present.

Impact of the Decision on Kohli’s Return

Kohli’s return to the Chinnaswamy Stadium was highly anticipated, especially since it would have marked his first appearance at the venue since the tragic stampede during the IPL victory celebrations for Royal Challengers Bangalore on June 4. The uncertainty surrounding the venue has been a topic of discussion among fans and players alike. With the matches now confirmed to be held at the Centre of Excellence, Kohli will still have the opportunity to showcase his skills, albeit without the support of a live audience.

The matches are crucial for Kohli and his teammates as they prepare for the upcoming challenges in the tournament. The shift to the Centre of Excellence allows the team to maintain their competitive edge while ensuring safety protocols are followed. Kohli’s presence in the squad is expected to boost team morale, even in a closed-door setting.

Training and Preparations Underway

Despite the venue change, Kohli and wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant joined the Delhi squad for a training session on Tuesday. The duo participated in an hour-long net practice alongside teammates Ishant Sharma and Navdeep Saini. This training session is vital for the players as they gear up for the matches at the Centre of Excellence.

The team is focused on adapting to the new venue and making the most of their practice time. Kohli’s leadership and experience will be instrumental in guiding the team through this transition. The players are determined to perform well, regardless of the circumstances, and are looking forward to the challenges ahead in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. The upcoming matches will be a test of their skills and resilience as they aim for success in the tournament.
