Vice-President Dhankhar Highlights India’s Aspirational Growth

In a recent address, the Vice-President of India, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar, emphasized the remarkable progress India has made in recent years. Speaking at the 75th Annual Function of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) in New Delhi, he drew connections between the nationโs economic growth and the cultural significance of the Kumbh Mela. His remarks highlighted the dual themes of economic aspiration and the importance of effective management in large-scale events. Dhankhar’s insights reflect a broader narrative of India’s journey towards becoming a developed nation, underscoring the role of professional bodies in this transformation.
The Kumbh Mela: India’s Management Skills
During his speech, Vice-President Dhankhar shared his experiences at the Kumbh Mela, a significant religious gathering that occurs once every 144 years. He described the event as a “Kumbh booster,” linking it to the recent budgetary measures that have positively impacted the taxpaying populace. Dhankhar expressed pride in the management of the Kumbh Mela, noting how effectively such a vast human congregation was organized. He stated, “How in such a small area, such a large human congregation has been taken care of, reflects India’s inclusivity and peace within us.”
Despite acknowledging a minor mishap during the event, he praised the management’s swift response, calling it “electric” and “nuclear.” This quick action ensured the safety and well-being of attendees. He commended the health facilities, law enforcement, and volunteers who contributed to the event’s success. Dhankhar’s reflections on the Kumbh Mela serve as a reminder of India’s capability to manage large-scale events while maintaining order and safety, showcasing the nation’s commitment to inclusivity and peace.
India’s Aspirational Population: A Double-Edged Sword
Vice-President Dhankhar highlighted the shift in the Indian populace towards an aspirational mindset. He noted that in the last decade, India has made significant strides in development, making it one of the fastest-growing economies in the world. This transformation has led to a population that is increasingly demanding and ambitious. “This aspirational mode is premised on the fact that in the last decade, no nation has progressed as much on the development aspect as Bharat,” he stated.
However, he also warned that this aspirational population poses challenges. If not properly channeled, it could become a “ticking time bomb.” Dhankhar emphasized the importance of harnessing this energy positively, comparing it to nuclear power. He expressed confidence in professional bodies like the ICAI to help convert this youth dividend into constructive energy. By doing so, they can prevent restlessness and ensure that the aspirations of the population contribute to national growth rather than unrest.
The Role of Chartered Accountants in Economic Growth
In his address, Vice-President Dhankhar underscored the critical role of chartered accountants in shaping India’s economic future. He expressed concern over the reliance on avoidable imports and the impact this has on the national economy. He stated, “When balance sheets shine, premised on avoidable imports, the national economy bleeds.” This situation leads to a drain of foreign exchange, loss of employment, and stunted entrepreneurial growth.
Dhankhar called for a spirit of economic nationalism, urging chartered accountants to lead this charge. He believes that their unique position at the intersection of business, finance, and governance enables them to drive significant reforms. “There is no other class other than chartered accountants who can bring about revolutionary positive change in business ethics and business promotion,” he asserted. By fostering a culture of economic nationalism, chartered accountants can help save billions in foreign exchange and create millions of jobs, thus contributing to the overall growth of the economy.
