Vice Admiral McCarty Takes Command of Andaman & Nicobar Command

Vice Admiral Vineet McCarty, AVSM, officially took charge as the 20th Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman & Nicobar Command (ANC) on June 1, 2026. His appointment marks a significant milestone in a career that has spanned over 36 years within the Indian Navy. McCarty’s extensive experience encompasses a variety of roles, including operational, staff, and training positions. He is renowned for his expertise in Gunnery and Missiles, having been commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1989.

Extensive Naval Experience

Throughout his illustrious naval career, Vice Admiral McCarty has served in several key positions. He was part of the commissioning crew of the INS Delhi and has held numerous specialist roles aboard this frontline destroyer. His leadership capabilities are further highlighted by his command of various ships, including the INS Ajay, INS Khanjar, and INS Shivalik.

In addition to his sea tenure, McCarty has been active in critical staff and training roles. Notable positions include his time as Training Commander at the Indian Naval Academy and as Command Plans Officer at the Headquarters Eastern Naval Command. In 2023, he successfully commanded the Western Fleet as Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet and served as the tenth Commandant of the Indian Naval Academy the following year.

Strategic Focus and Leadership Vision

Before his current role, Vice Admiral McCarty engaged in significant tri-service assignments at the Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS). There, he held two deputy chief positions focused on policy, planning, and force development, as well as doctrine and organization. His overseas expertise includes serving as Directing Staff at the Naval and Maritime Academy in Sri Lanka and acting as Defence Advisor for both Singapore and the Philippines from 2011 to 2015.

Upon assuming his new role, Vice Admiral McCarty emphasized the critical maritime significance of the Andaman & Nicobar Command. He articulated a strong commitment to enhancing operational readiness and improving collaboration among the various services. McCarty’s vision aims to reinforce the ANC’s stature as India’s premier Tri-Service Operational Command, thereby playing a crucial role in ensuring stability and security in the Indo-Pacific region.
