V.O. Chidambaranar Port Becomes India’s First Platinum Rated Major Port
The V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first major port in India to receive the esteemed IGBC Platinum Rating from the Indian Green Building Council. This recognition underscores the port’s commitment to sustainable practices and environmental excellence.
The Administrative Building of the port exemplifies adherence to a comprehensive Green Policy and a waste management plan aimed at bolstering sustainability. Key features include rooftop solar panels and a roof coating designed to minimize the Urban Heat Island effect, enhancing energy efficiency. The port has also implemented IoT-enabled water meters, air quality monitoring systems, rainwater harvesting, and water-efficient plumbing fixtures, collectively achieving a notable 37% reduction in potable water consumption. Furthermore, all wastewater is treated and repurposed through an on-site Sewage Treatment Plant.
100% Renewable Energy and Healthier Workspaces
In its efforts toward decarbonization, the Administrative Building runs entirely on renewable energy, with 89% of its electricity generated on-site from solar power and the remaining 11% sourced from off-site renewable facilities. Ensuring occupant health and safety is also a key focus; the building enforces a No Smoking Policy, employs eco-friendly cleaning products, and offers features such as non-slip ramps and accessible facilities for differently-abled individuals. This includes electric wheelchairs and lifts equipped with braille and audio assistance, catering to senior citizens and those with disabilities.
The VOC Port has also appointed seven IGBC Accredited Professionals to oversee sustainable practices and continual improvement within its operations. With over 70% of the campus covered by green vegetation, coupled with extensive tree plantation efforts, the port reinforces its commitment to a greener future.
Additional Certifications Underline Sustainability Goals
In addition to the IGBC Platinum Rating, V.O. Chidambaranar Port has received the Shunya and Shunya Plus certifications from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) under India’s Ministry of Power. The Shunya certification signifies that the building’s annual energy consumption is fully met with renewable energy sources, while Shunya Plus marks the achievement of generating more renewable energy than consumed. The Administrative Building and Guest House have been awarded Shunya certification, while the port’s Hospital and CISF Barracks hold Shunya Plus certification.
These accolades align with the Maritime India Vision 2030 and the Harit Sagar – Green Port Guidelines championed by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. The dual recognition of IGBC Platinum and BEE certifications positions V.O. Chidambaranar Port as a leader in sustainable infrastructure among Indian ports, setting a standard for inclusive growth through energy-efficient practices.
Chairperson Shri Susanta Kumar Purohit stated that the upgrades and policy measures were strategically designed to improve environmental performance and the well-being of occupants. He expressed pride in achieving these significant certifications, marking V.O. Chidambaranar Port as a pioneering major port in India.
