Urvashi Challenges 71st National Award Jury’s Decision on Shah Rukh Khan’s Best Actor Win Over Vijayaraghavan

The 71st National Film Awards, announced on August 1, brought joy to Shah Rukh Khan’s fans as the iconic actor received his first National Award for Best Actor for his role in Jawan. This milestone marks a significant achievement in his illustrious 33-year career. However, the decision has sparked controversy, particularly from veteran actress Urvashi, who has raised concerns about the jury’s criteria for distinguishing between main and supporting roles, specifically regarding the recognition of fellow actor Vijayaraghavan.

Urvashi Questions Jury’s Decision

In a recent interview with Asianet News, Urvashi expressed her discontent with the jury’s decision to categorize Vijayaraghavan as a supporting actor for his performance in *Pookkaalam*. She questioned the criteria that led to Shah Rukh Khan being awarded Best Actor while Vijayaraghavan was placed in a different category. Urvashi emphasized the need for transparency in the jury’s decision-making process, stating, โ€œWhat exactly did the jury consider to distinguish between Vijayaraghavan’s and Shah Rukh Khan’s performances? How did one become a supporting actor and the other the best actor?โ€

Urvashi highlighted that both actors have extensive experience and talent, suggesting that factors such as budget or production scale should not influence the jury’s decisions. She called for a fair evaluation process, noting that as taxpaying citizens, the industry should demand accountability from those who judge their work.

Celebrating Vijayaraghavan’s Performance

Urvashi also took the opportunity to commend Vijayaraghavan’s dedication in *Pookkaalam*, where he portrayed a 100-year-old man. She revealed that she was initially offered the role of his on-screen partner but declined due to the extensive makeup required for the character. โ€œEven if you pay me crores, I wouldn’t do it. But he, at his age, endured all of that and performed. That alone deserves at least a Special Mention,โ€ she remarked, underscoring her admiration for his commitment to the role.

At the awards ceremony, Shah Rukh Khan shared the Best Actor title with Vikrant Massey, who was recognized for his performance in *12th Fail*. Meanwhile, Vijayaraghavan was honored with the Best Supporting Actor award for his role in *Pookkaalam*, alongside veteran actress K. P. A. C. Leela.

Industry Reactions and Implications

The discussions surrounding the National Film Awards have ignited debates within the film industry about the criteria used for awards and the recognition of talent across different categories. Urvashi’s comments reflect a broader concern among actors and filmmakers regarding the fairness of the awards process. As the industry evolves, many are calling for a more equitable system that accurately reflects the contributions of all artists, regardless of their roles or the scale of their projects.

The National Film Awards are a prestigious recognition in Indian cinema, and the conversations sparked by this year’s results may lead to changes in how awards are evaluated in the future. As the industry continues to navigate these discussions, the voices of seasoned actors like Urvashi play a crucial role in advocating for fairness and transparency in recognizing artistic achievements.
