UPSC Introduces Major Reforms for 2026 Civil Services Exams
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has unveiled a series of technological enhancements for the upcoming Civil Services Examination (CSE) and Indian Forest Service Examination (IFoS) in 2026. This initiative aims to improve accessibility for candidates while bolstering examination security. The 2026 notifications reveal a total of 933 vacancies for CSE and 80 for IFoS.
Revamped Online Application Portal
As part of its commitment to transparency and efficiency, the UPSC has launched a redesigned Online Application Portal. This upgraded platform is designed to streamline the application process and ensure integrity throughout the examination stages. Candidates can now enjoy a smoother and more user-friendly application experience.
New Measures for Candidates with Disabilities
In a landmark reform, the UPSC has reorganized its examination centre allocation for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD). Under this fresh approach, there will be no limit on the capacity of centres available for PwBD candidates. This change allows PwBD candidates to select their preferred centres even when the general capacity is reached, ensuring greater accessibility during the exam.
Dr. Ajay Kumar, Chairman of UPSC, explained that data analysis over the last five years highlighted how certain centres, such as those in Delhi and Lucknow, quickly reach full capacity. To rectify this, the new allocation method guarantees that PwBD candidates can secure their chosen centres without facing restrictions that non-PwBD candidates encounter.
Expansion of Examination Centres
To alleviate congestion at popular examination centres, the UPSC has broadened its network. New centres have been established in Meerut, Kanpur, and Bhubaneswar, specifically for the Preliminary Examination. This expansion raises the total number of preliminary centres to 83. Additionally, centres for the Mains Examination have increased from 24 to 27, with Bhubaneswar, Srinagar, and Imphal included in the new lineup.
Enhanced Candidate Preferences
The revamped portal also introduces a feature allowing candidates to specify their preferred nearby cities from a dropdown menu when selecting exam centres. This feedback will help UPSC assess demand and pinpoint locations for potential new centres in the future.
Innovative Security Measures
As a further step towards ensuring the integrity of the examination, the UPSC has integrated advanced photo verification and face recognition technologies. These advancements are set to heighten identity checks, enhancing the entire examination experience with robust security protocols.
Dr. Ajay Kumar reiterated the Commission’s commitment to leveraging the latest technologies for a fair and accessible examination process. He emphasized the focus on ensuring that selections are based purely on merit, thereby upholding the highest standards of fairness and transparency. These innovative initiatives form part of UPSC’s celebrations for its Centenary Year, showcasing its dedication to evolving processes to meet modern standards while maintaining integrity and transparency in examinations.
