Union Minister Reviews Agricultural Schemes to Support Farmers
In a significant virtual meeting held on Tuesday, Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, closely examined the progress of key agricultural initiatives, namely the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) and the Krishi Unnati schemes. The discussion involved Agriculture Ministers and senior officials from multiple states, with a strong emphasis on the rightful use of government funds designed to support farmers.
During the review, Minister Chouhan highlighted the importance of timely and effective utilization of funds allocated by the Central Government, urging states to expend these resources efficiently for the benefit of farmers. He insisted that delays in spending undermine the objectives of these schemes, stressing the need for accountability as the financial year approaches its end.
Commitment to Farmer Welfare
The Union Minister provided a detailed overview of the schemes in question. He mentioned that 18 specific initiatives are being rolled out under the RKVY and Krishi Unnati programs, all aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity and infrastructure. The Minister voiced a strong commitment from the Central Government to ensure these schemes yield visible benefits for farmers in every corner of the country.
Reiterating the commitment to farmers’ financial security, Chouhan spoke about the Pradhan Mantri Annadata Aay Sanrakshan Abhiyan (PM – AASHA), which guarantees price support for various crops, particularly during the upcoming Rabi 2026 season. He explained how various components of this initiative aim to secure farmers’ incomes against market volatility.
Pricing Support for Crops
Under the Price Support Scheme, approvals have been granted for the procurement of significant quantities of crops, including gram and mustard, across states such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan. The procurement of 7,61,250 metric tonnes of gram in Maharashtra alone exemplifies the government’s efforts to ensure fair prices and income stability for farmers even during challenging market conditions.
Additionally, the Minister announced a strategic mission aimed at achieving self-sufficiency in pulse production by the year 2030-31. This ‘Self-Reliance in Pulses Mission’ is designed to provide farmers with guaranteed markets and prices while simultaneously reducing reliance on imports.
Focus on Sustainable Farming
Chouhan further stressed that such assured procurement would not only benefit farmers financially but would also encourage them to innovate and invest in improved farming practices, enhancing soil health and crop diversity. To maintain the agricultural sector’s resilience, the Minister expressed a vision where sustained efforts would continue in enhancing farmers’ incomes and safeguarding their livelihoods.
