Union Minister Champions Senior Citizens’ Role in Nation Building
In a vibrant interactive meeting held in New Delhi, Union Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Dr. Jitendra Singh, expressed high praise for the ongoing contributions of senior citizens in shaping the nation. The occasion marked the 35th Meeting of the Standing Committee of Voluntary Agencies (SCOVA), which brought together representatives from multiple Pensioners’ Associations.
The Department of Pension and Pensioners’ Welfare (DoPPW) remains dedicated to enhancing the lives of Central Government pensioners. Dr. Singh emphasized the government’s commitment to collaborating with various ministries to formulate effective pension policies and address the grievances of pensioners. This initiative aims to uphold the dignity and ease of living for those who have served the nation. The DoPPW also prioritizes close engagement with Pensioners’ Welfare Associations, representing millions across India to gather feedback and recommend necessary welfare measures.
Collaboration for Welfare
Established in 1986, the Standing Committee of Voluntary Agencies (SCOVA) plays an essential role in facilitating communication between the government and Pensioners’ Welfare Associations. The committee, chaired by the Minister of State for Personnel, includes a Secretary from the Department of Pension and Pensioners’ Welfare. It consists of 15 non-official members who represent various pensioners’ associations, as well as official representatives from relevant government ministries.
During the meeting, representatives from Pensioners’ Welfare Associations across several states, including Delhi, Karnataka, Telangana, and Maharashtra, discussed pressing issues impacting pensioners. Senior officials from ministries such as Health and Family Welfare, Railways, and Defence Accounts participated in the discussions, focusing on various aspects of pensioners’ welfare and grievance resolution.
Encouraging Senior Engagement
Dr. Jitendra Singh highlighted the invaluable role of senior citizens in governance, attributing significant weight to their insights and suggestions. He urged pensioners’ associations to provide constructive feedback and proactive suggestions rather than merely addressing grievances. This collaborative approach is expected to foster improvements in policies and services for pensioners.
The outcomes of this meeting are anticipated to enhance coordination between the government and pensioners’ associations. Such efforts aim to improve the overall quality of life for Central Government pensioners, showcasing the government’s commitment to their well-being.
