Union Minister Calls for Urgent Mangrove Conservation at Gujarat Workshop
In a significant gathering focused on coastal conservation, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Bhupender Yadav, addressed the Workshop on Mangrove Conservation, Restoration, and Sustainable Management in Bhuj, Kachchh, Gujarat. The Minister highlighted the necessity of treating mangroves as vital ecosystems, emphasizing their crucial role in supporting coastal biodiversity, enhancing fisheries, safeguarding shorelines, and bolstering climate resilience, alongside promoting local livelihoods.
State Commitment to Mangrove Preservation
The workshop was graced by prominent Gujarat officials, including Shri Arjun Modhwadia, Cabinet Minister for Forest and Environment, and Shri Trikambhai Chhanga, Minister of State for Higher and Technical Education. Both ministers reaffirmed the Gujarat government’s ongoing commitment to mangrove conservation as part of the MISHTI (Mangrove Initiative for Shoreline Habitats & Tangible Incomes) program, aimed at restoring coastal ecosystems.
Progress Under MISHTI Initiative
During the event, Minister Yadav reviewed the state’s initiatives under the MISHTI program, where notable progress has been reported in mangrove restoration. He mentioned that Gujarat has restored 27,652 hectares of mangroves, working towards a target of 29,250 hectares by 2027. This restoration includes a remarkable 12,450 hectares in the ecologically sensitive Kori Creek region. The government has implemented tailored restoration strategies specific to Kachchh’s unique conditions, promoting biodiversity as well as cultivating seaweed and other sustainable livelihoods.
Knowledge Sharing and New Initiatives
To further scientific endeavors and decision-making in mangrove conservation, Shri Yadav launched several critical resources during the workshop. These included a Coffee Table Book on Kachchh Mangroves, the Mangroves Atlas of Gujarat, and the Mangrove GIS (MGIS) Portal, designed to enhance monitoring of mangrove habitats across the state. Additionally, he recognized the efforts of the Guneri Inland Mangrove Village Biodiversity Management Committee, praising their leadership in conserving the unique Guneri inland mangroves, which were designated Gujarat’s first Biodiversity Heritage Site in January 2025.
Collaborative Efforts for Coastal Ecosystems
The workshop gathered various stakeholders, including senior officials from the Union Ministry and the Gujarat Forest Department, alongside scientists, conservationists, and community representatives actively involved in mangrove restoration and coastal livelihood projects. Their collaboration aims to ensure the sustainable management of these critical coastal ecosystems while enhancing community participation and awareness.
