Training Program on ESG for Board Members

The Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA) recently hosted a specialized training program titled โESG for Board Members.โ This three-day residential training took place from January 30 to February 1, 2025, at the United Nations Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific in Bangkok, Thailand. The initiative aims to emphasize the importance of integrating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors into corporate strategies. Dr. Ajay Bhushan Prasad Pandey, the Director General and CEO of IICA, inspired this program, highlighting the need for leadership commitment to achieve sustainability goals, including Net-Zero targets. The program was inaugurated by Mr. Gerd Trogemann, the Regional Manager of the Global Policy Network and Regional Programme for Asia-Pacific at the United Nations.
Understanding ESG in Corporate Governance
The training program focused on the critical role of ESG in corporate governance. Participants learned how to build a compelling business case for ESG considerations in board decision-making. The curriculum provided insights into both the Indian and global contexts of ESG, guiding attendees on how to initiate their ESG journey. Key topics included embedding ESG into corporate strategy, understanding the impact of climate change, and recognizing the board’s accountability in these matters.
The program also addressed the design of resilient business models and risk mitigation strategies. It emphasized the evolving role of the board in corporate accountability and the importance of stakeholder engagement for ESG success. Participants explored governance of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and the board’s role in it. Additionally, the program covered public disclosures on ESG, business and human rights due diligence, and effective grievance redressal mechanisms. This comprehensive approach aimed to equip board members with the knowledge needed to lead their organizations toward sustainable practices.
Expert Insights and Peer Learning
The sessions were led by a distinguished group of experts and facilitators, including Prof. Garima Dadhich, Dr. Harpreet Kaur, and Ms. Olga Nilova, among others. Their diverse backgrounds provided participants with a wealth of knowledge and practical insights. On the final day, delegations from Thai companies shared their ESG journeys, discussing best practices and challenges they faced in implementing ESG strategies. This peer learning opportunity allowed Indian delegates from both public and private sectors to gain valuable insights and foster collaborative discussions.
The program attracted a wide range of participants, including Chairmen, Directors, Independent Directors, and senior leaders from various corporations. It offered a unique platform for these leaders to contribute to sustainable business practices in a rapidly changing world. By co-creating a collaborative system for exchanging knowledge and ideas, the program aimed to elevate the understanding and implementation of ESG principles at the highest levels of corporate governance.
Building a Cadre of ESG Professionals
IICA is recognized for its commitment to developing ESG professionals through its six-month ESG Professional program. This initiative aims to build a cadre of impact leaders equipped to navigate the complexities of ESG in the corporate landscape. The recent training program was launched in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, based on recommendations from the High-Level Advisory Committee.
The program reflects IICA’s dedication to addressing the needs of board representatives and enhancing their understanding of ESG issues. By providing tailored training, IICA seeks to empower leaders to make informed decisions that align with global sustainability goals. This initiative not only strengthens corporate governance but also contributes to the broader objective of fostering responsible business practices in India and beyond.
