TRAI Reports on Mobile Network Quality in Sonipat City
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has published the outcomes of an Independent Drive Test (IDT) conducted in Sonipat City, Haryana, in December 2025. This assessment aimed to evaluate the real-world performance of mobile network services offered by various Telecom Service Providers (TSPs), focusing on both voice and data quality.
During the comprehensive drive test, TRAI collected live performance metrics from different service providers, analyzing critical indicators such as call setup success rates, data upload and download speeds, and overall speech quality. By utilizing advanced test handsets, real-time monitoring, and sophisticated software systems, TRAI ensured accurate and detailed results. These findings have been made publicly available on the TRAI website and in local newspapers to keep consumers informed and to motivate TSPs to enhance their services.
Key Findings from the Drive Test
Conducted by the TRAI Regional Office in Jaipur, the IDT covered extensive areas within Sonipat, amounting to a total drive distance of 188.4 kilometers and including eight hotspot locations from December 2 to December 4, 2025. Here is a summary of the results highlighting both voice and data services:
Voice Services Performance
The IDT analyzed voice services using different key performance indicators (KPIs) in 3G/2G mode:
- Call Setup Success Rate: Airtel and Vodafone Idea (VIL) both achieved a perfect score of 100%, while BSNL and Reliance Jio (RJIL) reported 91.27% and 99.79% respectively.
- Drop Call Rate: Airtel had no dropped calls, while BSNL had a drop rate of 0.23% and RJIL 0.63%.
- Call Setup Time: Airtel recorded a swift average of 1.23 seconds, while BSNL took 6.59 seconds on average.
- Call Silence Rate: Airtel experienced 0.53% silent calls, as opposed to V3.08%.
- Mean Opinion Score (MOS): RJIL led the ratings with 4.37, followed closely by VIL at 4.43.
Data Services Performance
For data services, the IDT assessed mobile networks across multiple generations (5G/4G/3G/2G), and here are the results:
- Average Download Throughput: RJIL demonstrated the highest average download speed at 250.35 Mbps, while BSNL lagged significantly behind at 14.66 Mbps.
- Average Upload Throughput: Again, Airtel led with 37.81 Mbps, with BSNL showing just 4.27 Mbps.
- Latency: Airtel achieved a latency of 15.91 ms, showcasing superior performance compared to BSNL’s 24.97 ms.
The drive test encompassed all crucial areas within Sonipat, including regions like Seoli, Jatheri, Harsana Kalan, and Murthal Road, among others. TRAI has communicated the findings to the respective TSPs to prompt any necessary corrective measures.
