TRAI Evaluates Network Quality in Amritsar City

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has unveiled its Independent Drive Test (IDT) results for the Punjab Licensed Service Area, conducted in June 2025. This comprehensive assessment evaluated mobile network performance across various urban environments, including institutional hotspots and public transport hubs. The drive tests, which spanned over 343 kilometers, aimed to provide insights into the quality of voice and data services offered by telecom service providers (TSPs) in the region.

Comprehensive Testing Across Diverse Locations

Between June 17 and June 20, 2025, TRAI teams executed extensive drive tests covering 343.1 kilometers in urban areas, alongside assessments at 12 hotspot locations and a 2-kilometer walk test. The tests were conducted under the supervision of the TRAI Regional Office in Delhi, utilizing standardized protocols and equipment to ensure accuracy. The evaluation included various technologies, such as 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G, reflecting the service experience of users across different handset capabilities. The findings have been communicated to all relevant TSPs, ensuring they are aware of their performance metrics.

The testing locations included high-density neighborhoods in Amritsar, such as Loharka Kalan, Raja Sansi, and Attari, as well as significant sites like the Golden Temple and local educational institutions. The walk test specifically focused on the Golden Temple Market, capturing mobile network behavior in crowded pedestrian environments. This thorough approach aimed to assess real-world conditions and provide a comprehensive overview of network performance.

Key Performance Metrics Evaluated

The IDT findings assessed several critical parameters for both voice and data services. For voice services, the evaluation included the Call Setup Success Rate (CSSR), Drop Call Rate (DCR), Call Setup Time, Call Silence Rate, Speech Quality (Mean Opinion Score), and overall coverage. In terms of data services, the assessment focused on Download and Upload Throughput, Latency, Jitter, Packet Drop Rate, and Video Streaming Delay.

The results indicated that Airtel, BSNL, RJIL, and VIL achieved varying levels of success in these metrics. For instance, the Call Setup Success Rate for Airtel was 99.31%, while BSNL recorded 98.10%. In terms of Drop Call Rates, Airtel and VIL reported 0.00%, showcasing their reliability in maintaining calls. These metrics are crucial for understanding the quality of service provided to consumers in the region.

Insights into Voice and Data Service Performance

The detailed report highlighted the performance of different telecom operators in both voice and data services. In voice service metrics, Airtel led with a Call Setup Time of 1.34 seconds, while BSNL recorded a longer time of 2.62 seconds. The Mean Opinion Score (MOS) for voice quality also varied, with Airtel achieving an average score of 3.98, indicating a higher satisfaction level among users compared to BSNL’s score of 2.15.

On the data service front, the average download speeds revealed significant disparities among the operators. Airtel achieved an impressive average download speed of 237.99 Mbps, while BSNL lagged with only 3.78 Mbps. The upload speeds followed a similar trend, with Airtel at 31.90 Mbps compared to BSNL’s 3.45 Mbps. These findings underscore the varying levels of service quality that consumers experience, emphasizing the need for continuous improvement in network performance.

Accessing the Full Report and Future Implications

The comprehensive findings from the IDT are available on the TRAI website, providing stakeholders with valuable insights into the mobile network landscape in Punjab. For further information or clarification, interested parties can contact Shri Vivek Khare, Advisor at the TRAI Regional Office in Delhi. The results of these tests not only inform consumers about their service options but also guide telecom operators in enhancing their network capabilities to meet user demands effectively. As mobile connectivity continues to evolve, such assessments play a crucial role in ensuring that service providers maintain high standards of quality and reliability.
