Toxic Debacle Aftermath: The Odyssey Makes a Swift Return to IMAX Screens in India Just 48 Hours Later
On August 26, Bollywood Hungama reported a significant shift in the IMAX screening landscape as “The Odyssey” was removed from IMAX screens after an impressive 40-day run. The film, featuring Matt Damon, had garnered a remarkable Rs. 90 crores from just 34 IMAX screens. Its consistent audience draw and strong occupancy rates right until the end of its run surprised many, leading to widespread discussions among fans.
Return of “The Odyssey” to IMAX Screens
In an unexpected turn of events, “The Odyssey” has made a swift return to IMAX screens across the country, with the exception of Bengaluru, following the underperformance of “Toxic,” a film starring Yash. A source revealed to Bollywood Hungama, “Even on its last day, The Odyssey ran with 43% occupancy, which was unbelievable. It proved that there was a lot of gas left in the tank.” Warner Bros, the distributor of “The Odyssey,” had requested just one IMAX show due to the ongoing demand, but the distributors of “Toxic” insisted on exclusive IMAX screenings.
The source added, “But since Toxic had not worked as expected, the IMAX theatres were allowed to bring back The Odyssey. It was expected that, if at all this happened, it would happen next week or after a fortnight. No one imagined that The Odyssey would be back in just two days.”
IMAX Theatres Reprogramming “The Odyssey”
As of August 28, several cinemas have begun screening “The Odyssey” once again. Locations such as Cinepolis Seawoods and Cinepolis Thane near Mumbai, Cinepolis Aundh in Pune, PVR Palazzo and Inox Luxe in Chennai, and Cinepolis Centre Square in Kochi have all programmed shows for the film. Within hours, more theatres joined in, including Mumbai’s PVR Lower Parel and Inox R City. Notably, PVR Lower Parel and Cinepolis Seawoods will showcase two shows, while Delhi’s IMAX cinemas have also committed to one show each.
Broadway Cinemas in Coimbatore stands out as the only IMAX cinema in India that never discontinued “The Odyssey,” continuing to screen two shows even after August 26. Meanwhile, Bengaluru remains the only city where IMAX screens will continue to show “Toxic” without accommodating “The Odyssey,” at least until the weekend.
Occupancy Rates and Future Prospects
On August 26, “Toxic” recorded an occupancy rate of 51.6% in IMAX, while “The Odyssey” followed closely with 48.7%. However, by August 27, “Toxic” saw a sharp decline in occupancy to 17.4%, while “The Odyssey” maintained a steady 37.6%. This trend raises questions about whether “The Odyssey” can surpass the Rs. 100 crore mark now that it has returned to IMAX screens.
