Three Initiatives Announced at International Purple Fest
On October 11, Goa hosted the second day of the International Purple Fest, where three groundbreaking initiatives were unveiled to enhance accessibility for individuals with disabilities in listening, reading, and writing. These initiatives, launched by Shri Rajesh Aggarwal, Secretary of the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, signify a pivotal move towards inclusive education and skill development. The event was attended by notable figures, including Shri Taha Haaziq and representatives from various organizations, all committed to fostering a barrier-free learning environment.
Launch of the IELTS Training Handbook
The first significant initiative introduced was the IELTS Training Handbook for Persons with Disabilities, developed by Believe in the Invisible (BITI) with support from the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD). Authored by Anjali Vyas, a co-founder of BITI and a certified IELTS trainer, this handbook is a pioneering resource aimed at making IELTS preparation accessible for individuals with disabilities. It serves as both a self-study guide and a teaching manual, addressing the unique challenges faced by persons with visual, hearing, locomotor, and other disabilities in accessing traditional IELTS resources.
The handbook includes reasonable accommodation guidelines, adapted strategies, and practical tools for each of the four IELTS modules: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Key features consist of step-by-step instructions, skill-building activities, and accessible practice materials tailored to various difficulty levels. Additionally, it offers teaching strategies specifically designed for learners with disabilities, lesson plans, exam preparation techniques, and resources for grammar and vocabulary development. The inclusion of Indian Sign Language (ISL) video links further enhances its accessibility. This initiative marks a significant advancement in promoting equal opportunities in global language proficiency training.
ISLRTC’s Skill Training Initiative
The second major announcement came from the Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre (ISLRTC), which is dedicated to the development and training of Indian Sign Language. As part of its Skill Training Initiative, ISLRTC successfully conducted the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) certification course in ISL Interpretation for Siblings of Deaf Adults (SODA) and Children of Deaf Adults (CODA) from August 11 to August 29, 2025. Seventeen candidates from across India participated in this offline course, all of whom successfully completed the assessment. A certificate distribution ceremony for this inaugural batch is scheduled for December 3, 2025, coinciding with the International Day for Persons with Disabilities.
In response to the increasing demand for Indian Sign Language professionals with international exposure, ISLRTC also announced a Specialized Basic Training Programme on American Sign Language (ASL) and British Sign Language (BSL). This one-month physical training program will commence on December 3, 2025, and aims to introduce ISL professionals to the fundamentals of ASL and BSL, including grammar, syntax, and vocabulary. The initiative is designed to enhance professional opportunities for Indian interpreters in international settings and promote Indian culture and heritage among global deaf communities.
