Textiles Exporters Encounter New Trade Uncertainty Following Trump’s Policies

US President Donald Trump’s recent tariff announcements have sparked new uncertainties in the global textile market, prompting buyers to hesitate on new orders. While Indian textile exporters may benefit from Bangladesh facing a hefty 35% duty, the industry remains vigilant regarding India’s ongoing trade negotiations with the United States. Trump has indicated that a deal with Vietnam could lead to a 20% tariff, although specific product concessions may apply. As countries like Bangladesh rush to Washington to reassess their positions, the final outcome of these tariffs remains uncertain.

Impact on Indian Textile Exports

The textile industry in India is closely monitoring the evolving tariff landscape. V Elangovan, managing director of SNQS International, expressed concerns about buyer confusion amidst the shifting tariff policies. He noted that Indian exporters are facing stiff competition from Chinese manufacturers, who are reportedly offering better prices despite higher tariffs. This situation raises questions about the competitiveness of Indian textiles, especially in the synthetic garment sector, where production costs are significantly higher compared to natural garments.

The Indian government and industry stakeholders are advocating for zero duties on garments and home textiles, where Indian products have a competitive edge. However, the Trump administration has shown reluctance to eliminate the 10% baseline tariff that applies to all countries. Currently, Indian exporters are at a slight advantage over their competitors, provided that Chinese manufacturers do not receive additional subsidies. The Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) has highlighted that while the cost disadvantage in natural garments is minimal, it increases substantially in the synthetic category.

Tariff Comparisons and Competitiveness

With the current tariff rates set at 26% for India, 20% for Vietnam, and 35% for Bangladesh, Indian exporters are positioned favorably in the natural garment segment. However, they face challenges in the synthetic garment market. K M Subramani, president of the Tirupur Exporters’ Association, expressed optimism about the potential for a favorable trade deal that could enhance India’s export competitiveness. The AEPC’s CEO, Mithileshwar Thakur, emphasized that even a modest reduction in the reciprocal tariff to around 15% could significantly boost India’s competitiveness across both natural and synthetic garment categories.

The ability of Indian garment manufacturers to scale production remains a critical factor. The industry has shown some reluctance to invest in expanding capacity, which could hinder its ability to meet increasing demand. As global sourcing trends shift, the need for Indian manufacturers to adapt and enhance their production capabilities becomes increasingly urgent.

Future Outlook for Indian Textile Industry

As the textile industry navigates these turbulent waters, the focus remains on the potential outcomes of ongoing trade negotiations. The uncertainty surrounding tariffs is causing buyers to adopt a cautious approach, which could impact order volumes in the short term. Industry leaders are hopeful that a favorable trade agreement with the US will emerge, which could further enhance India’s position in the global textile market.

The interplay of tariffs and international trade dynamics will continue to shape the landscape for Indian textile exporters. With the right strategies and government support, the industry may be able to capitalize on its strengths and improve its competitive edge. As stakeholders await clarity on tariff adjustments, the emphasis on innovation and capacity building will be crucial for sustaining growth in this vital sector.
