Tendulkar Calls on Indians to Embrace Diversity in Sports Beyond Cricket

Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar marked National Sports Day by celebrating India’s diverse sporting achievements and encouraging fitness among citizens. In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Tendulkar expressed pride in the accomplishments of young athletes across various disciplines, emphasizing that India’s sporting success extends beyond cricket. He highlighted the importance of inspiring individuals of all ages and abilities to engage in physical activities.

Celebrating Young Champions

In his message, Tendulkar acknowledged the remarkable achievements of several young athletes who have made headlines recently. He specifically mentioned Divya Deshmukh, who became the youngest FIDE Women’s World Cup Chess champion, and D. Gukesh, who earned the title of the youngest men’s winner. Additionally, he praised wrestler Rachana for her gold medal at the U17 World Championship 2025 and Naisha Mehta for her victory in Junior Girls Solo Dance at the Asian Roller Skating Championship. These young champions exemplify the spirit of determination and excellence that Tendulkar believes should inspire others.

Acknowledging Lesser-Known Sports

Tendulkar also took the opportunity to recognize athletes excelling in lesser-known sports. He highlighted Tulika Maan’s achievements in judo and the historic success of the women’s lawn bowls team, which included Rupa Rani Tirkey, Lovely Choubey, Pinki, and Nayanmoni Saikia. This team secured a gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, showcasing the growing recognition of diverse sports in India. Tendulkar’s acknowledgment of these athletes underscores the importance of celebrating achievements across all sporting disciplines.

Promoting Fitness and Inclusivity

In his message, Tendulkar stressed that excelling in sports is commendable, but the ability of athletes to inspire others is equally significant. He encouraged people of all ages, including those with disabilities, to engage in physical activities. Whether through competitive sports or light exercise, he believes that everyone can benefit from pushing their limits and embracing a healthier lifestyle. This inclusive approach to fitness aligns with the broader goals of promoting health and well-being in society.

National Sports Day and Its Significance

National Sports Day, celebrated annually on August 29, honors the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, who led India to three Olympic gold medals. This day, first observed in 1995 and recognized nationally since 2012, symbolizes India’s commitment to health, fitness, and sporting excellence. This year’s celebration features a three-day nationwide sports and fitness movement, organized by the Fit India Mission, under the theme ‘Ek Ghanta, Khel ke Maidan Main’. The initiative aims to encourage participation in sports and physical activities across the country, reinforcing the importance of fitness in daily life.
