Tata and Lockheed Martin Unveil New Defence MRO Facility in India to Support C-130J Aircraft for IAF

India’s defense aviation sector is poised for a significant advancement with the launch of a new Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility for the C-130J Super Hercules aircraft. This initiative, a collaboration between Tata Advanced Systems and Lockheed Martin, was inaugurated in Bengaluru on Monday. The facility aims to enhance the Indian Air Force’s in-country sustainment capabilities while also providing services to regional and global operators of the C-130 aircraft.

Groundbreaking Ceremony Highlights Collaboration

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials from the Indian Air Force, government representatives, and executives from both Tata Advanced Systems and Lockheed Martin. This event marks a pivotal moment in the longstanding partnership between the two companies, reflecting their commitment to strengthening India’s defense capabilities. Lockheed Martin’s Chief Operating Officer, Frank St John, emphasized the significance of this development, stating that it showcases the evolution of their collaboration with India. He noted that the new MRO facility will not only support the Indian Air Force but also cater to other C-130 operators globally.

Strengthening Domestic Defense Capabilities

Tata Advanced Systems’ CEO, Sukaran Singh, highlighted that the establishment of the MRO facility represents a milestone in India’s journey towards self-reliance in defense. He stated that this initiative is more than just the creation of a new facility; it symbolizes India’s growing confidence and capability in shaping its defense future. The MRO project is expected to bolster the aerospace ecosystem in India, fostering innovation, skill development, and enhancing global competitiveness.

The facility will provide a range of services, including depot-level maintenance, component repair, structural checks, avionics upgrades, and structural restoration. Additionally, it will expand training opportunities for Indian engineers and maintainers, while also creating new prospects for local suppliers involved in the C-130 supply chain.

Future Prospects and Global Integration

Tata Advanced Systems has already been involved in manufacturing components for the C-130 aircraft, including empennages and other aerostructure assemblies. The recent groundbreaking follows the successful delivery of the 250th C-130J tail by Tata Lockheed Martin Aerostructures Limited (TLMAL). Once operational, the MRO center will join Lockheed Martin’s global network of Certified Service Centers, supporting not only the C-130J Super Hercules but also the KC-130J and legacy C-130 B-H models.

Lockheed Martin has maintained a presence in India for over three decades, and the construction of the new MRO complex is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. The first C-130 aircraft is anticipated to arrive for maintenance in early 2027.

C-130J Super Hercules: A Versatile Asset

The C-130J-30, currently in service with the Indian Air Force, is recognized for its fuel efficiency and lower lifecycle costs compared to other medium-sized jet airlifters. Since its introduction to India in 2011, the aircraft has been utilized for various demanding operations, including missions in challenging terrains and adverse weather conditions. Globally, over 560 C-130Js are operational across 23 nations, accumulating more than 3 million flight hours in diverse mission types, ranging from combat delivery to humanitarian response. This new MRO facility is set to enhance the operational readiness and longevity of the C-130 fleet in India and beyond.
