Tamsa River Revived Through Community and Administrative Efforts

In the heart of eastern Uttar Pradesh, the Tamsa River—a revered tributary of the Ganga—has undergone a stunning transformation in the Azamgarh district. Once burdened by siltation, waste buildup, and encroachments, this vital watercourse is now thriving, thanks to coordinated administrative efforts and robust community participation under the Namami Gange Programme.

The Tamsa flows through Ambedkar Nagar, Ayodhya, and Azamgarh before joining the Ganga. Recognizing its ecological and cultural significance, officials initiated a specialized conservation and cleanliness campaign in Azamgarh, garnering enthusiastic support from the District Ganga Committee and local communities.

Community-Led Initiatives Expand Across 111 Gram Panchayats

This rejuvenation project spans approximately 89 kilometers in Azamgarh and traverses 111 Gram Panchayats. Creating a structured and comprehensive plan required grassroots involvement. District Magistrate Shri Ravindra Kumar stated that meetings held with all Gram Pradhans aimed to raise awareness about river cleanliness and the long-term environmental and economic advantages associated with it.

Action steps included:

  • Desilting shallow river stretches
  • Removing garbage from riverbanks
  • Assessing and preserving vacant riverbank land while clearing illegal encroachments
  • Planting fruit-bearing trees along available land parcels

The plantation effort not only aids ecological recovery but also offers economic benefits, as the produce can be utilized by the respective Gram Panchayats.

Engagement through Shramdaan and Awareness Campaigns

Under the Namami Gange Programme, a variety of coordinated initiatives were undertaken alongside the State Mission for Clean Ganga to ensure sustained impact. Cleanliness drives and awareness campaigns engaged schoolchildren, youth, women’s self-help groups, Gram Panchayats, NGOs, and local inhabitants.

Through Shramdaan, volunteers cleared plastic, polythene, and other solid wastes from the riverbanks and ghats. Sanitation workers were mobilized, dustbins were installed in key areas, and campaigns were conducted to promote the segregation of wet and dry waste, discouraging dumping into the river.

The initiative has positively affected cultural and religious activities along the riverbanks, enhancing the experience of devotees visiting for rituals and sacred bathing in a cleaner and more structured environment.

Environmental Benefits and Economic Support

Local officials emphasize the crucial role of keeping the Tamsa clean to maintain the purity of the Ganga. These ongoing efforts have led to noticeable improvements in water quality, biodiversity revival, and better soil fertility and irrigation potential in surrounding agricultural lands.

Shri Ram Udrej Yadav, Deputy Commissioner (Labour & Employment) of Azamgarh, praised the significant involvement of Gram Panchayats and the convergence with MGNREGA. Elected officials, MGNREGA workers, and community volunteers have all contributed to desilting, cleaning, and planting efforts, reinforcing a model of community engagement in river restoration.

A Model for Future River Conservation

The revitalization of the Tamsa River serves as a testament to the effectiveness of dedicated administrative commitment coupled with community involvement in restoring vital river ecosystems. This initiative is poised to become a replicable model for conserving tributaries and smaller rivers throughout the Ganga basin.

The ongoing quest for cleanliness and conservation of the Tamsa and its fellow tributaries will persist under the Namami Gange mission, furthering the vision of a clean, healthy, and sustainable river system.
