Tamil Nadu’s Railway Budget Soars, Yet Land Acquisition Delays Persist
Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & Information Technology, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, announced a significant increase in the budget allocation for Tamil Nadu, which has risen more than 8.5 times since 2014. The budget is set to reach ₹7,611 crore in the fiscal year 2026–27. Despite this upward trend, the execution of railway projects in the state is facing serious hurdles due to land acquisition delays.
Land Acquisition Challenges Hinder Progress
As it stands, only 24% of the land needed for ongoing railway projects has been handed over, totaling just 1,052 hectares out of the required 4,326 hectares. The Tamil Nadu Government has already received ₹1,465 crore for land acquisition; however, delays in this critical area are causing setbacks for numerous projects. Notably, 91% of the land acquisition remains incomplete for the new Madurai–Tuticorin railway line, and 86% is pending for the Tindivanam–Gingee–Tiruvannamalai new line, further complicating development efforts.
New Initiatives and Goals
Despite these challenges, the Central Government has remained proactive, approving multiple new railway lines and enhancements. Detailed project reports (DPRs) for further capacity expansions are also underway to bolster the economic and industrial growth of Tamil Nadu.
Additionally, 77 Amrit stations in the state have been earmarked for comprehensive redevelopment, with progress already reported at 18 stations. Since 2014, an impressive 1,350 kilometers of railway tracks have been constructed, reflecting the commitment to enhance rail infrastructure in the region. The electrification of rail lines has reached an admirable 97%, with 2,386 kilometers fully electrified during the same timeframe.

The introduction of Indian-made modern trains is revolutionizing travel for Tamil Nadu residents. Currently, nine pairs of Vande Bharat Express and Amrit Bharat Express services are operational, ensuring affordable and efficient transit options for the public.
