Successful National Workshop for Mangrove Conservation Held in Andhra Pradesh

A national workshop focusing on the MISHTI initiative, which stands for Mangrove Initiative for Shoreline Habitats and Tangible Incomes, was conducted in Andhra Pradesh on January 8 and 9, 2026. The event was inaugurated by Andhra Pradesh’s Deputy Chief Minister, Shri Pawan Kalyan, who acknowledged Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s visionary leadership in promoting environmental conservation. He also expressed gratitude to Union Minister for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Shri Bhupender Yadav, for his invaluable support in advancing the MISHTI scheme aimed at conserving mangroves.

Collaboration for Sustainable Solutions

The workshop gathered forest officials, experts, and stakeholders, all committed to discussing sustainable strategies for mangrove conservation and restoration. A significant highlight of the event was a presentation by Anand Mohan, the Chief Executive Officer of the National CAMPA, who spoke about the goals and implementation strategies of the MISHTI initiative.

Objectives of the MISHTI Initiative

The MISHTI initiative seeks to develop and preserve mangrove ecosystems with a strong focus on restoring mangroves, protecting shorelines, conserving biodiversity, and creating feasible livelihood opportunities for coastal communities. This mission aligns with the efforts of the Mangrove Alliance for Climate (MAC), which India joined during COP-27 of the UNFCCC.

The Importance of Mangroves

During the presentation, Anand Mohan emphasized the essential role of mangroves in enhancing climate resilience, safeguarding coastlines, and offering sustainable economic benefits. He highlighted the necessity for coordinated efforts among different states and institutions to effectively implement the initiative.

A Platform for Dialogue and Knowledge Sharing

The two-day workshop served as a crucial platform for exchanging knowledge, sharing best practices, and fostering policy dialogue. It reinforced the collective commitment to strengthening mangrove ecosystems and ensuring sustainable livelihoods for coastal populations under the MISHTI framework. Attendees left with renewed motivation to collaborate and innovate in mangrove restoration and conservation efforts.
