Study Links Desert Dust to Health Risks in Eastern Himalayas
A groundbreaking study has revealed a concerning link between airborne pathogens transported by desert dust from Western India and increased health risks in the Eastern Himalayas. The research highlights how these pathogens are associated with respiratory and skin diseases, raising alarms about public health in this mountainous region.
The study, conducted over two years by researchers at the Bose Institute, an autonomous body of the Department of Science and Technology, emphasizes that the atmosphere atop the Himalayas, often viewed as beneficial for health, is not as safe as previously thought. Although cold climatic conditions and hypoxia in high-altitude areas typically reduce some health vulnerabilities, the study indicates that exposure to airborne microbes can exacerbate respiratory issues in local populations.
Impact of Dust Storms on Health
Researchers found that powerful dust storms originating from arid regions of Western India can travel vast distances, sometimes crossing the densely populated and polluted Indo-Gangetic Plain. These storms finally settle on the high altitudes of the Himalayas, where they carry a variety of airborne bacteria, including harmful pathogens.
In addition to pathogens transported from afar, locally sourced pathogens are uplifted to the high-altitude atmosphere. This combination of long-range and local pollution reconfigures the bacterial community in the air above the Himalayas, raising the risk of gastrointestinal infections alongside respiratory and skin diseases.
First-of-Its-Kind Research
This pioneering study, published in the journal Science of the Total Environment, presents quantitative evidence of how the atmospheric bacterial community above the Himalayas is disturbed by both horizontal dust transport and vertical uplift of polluted air from the foothills. The findings carry significant implications for public health, suggesting a need for enhanced awareness and preventive measures.
