Strengthening India’s Electronics Industry

India’s electronic goods industry is at a pivotal moment. Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, emphasized the need for collaboration among industry players to create resilient supply chains and enhance quality standards. Speaking at the 16th Edition of ‘ELECRAMA’ in New Delhi, he urged the sector to provide high-quality goods and services at competitive prices. This call to action aims to position India as a global leader in electronics manufacturing.
The Need for Collaboration
During his address, Minister Goyal stressed the importance of unity within the electronic goods sector. He highlighted that collaboration can lead to competitive advantages in manufacturing. The industry must work together to ensure that consumers receive better deals. Goyal warned against the dangers of protectionism, stating that it can ultimately harm consumers. He urged industry leaders to prioritize the interests of both the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector and consumers. By balancing these interests, the industry can thrive while ensuring that consumers benefit from quality products at fair prices.
The Minister’s remarks reflect a broader understanding that the electronics industry must adapt to changing global dynamics. As competition intensifies, companies must innovate and improve their offerings. This collaborative approach will not only enhance the industry’s reputation but also foster a more sustainable and consumer-friendly market.
Aiming for Global Leadership
Minister Goyal highlighted the remarkable growth of India’s electronic goods exports. In 2025, the sector ranked second in export volume, a significant leap from its 167th position in 2015. He noted that in January 2025 alone, the export volume reached USD 3 billion. Goyal set an ambitious target for the industry, urging it to aspire to achieve an international trade export goal of USD 100 billion within the next seven years.
To reach this target, the industry must focus on becoming a one-stop shop for electrical goods. This vision requires not only high-quality products but also efficient supply chains and competitive pricing. By positioning itself as a global leader, India can attract international buyers and enhance its economic standing.
Government Initiatives Supporting Growth
The Indian government has played a crucial role in supporting the electronics industry. Minister Goyal pointed out that the sector has doubled its transmission infrastructure and renewable energy capacity over the past decade. The establishment of 1,800 Global Capability Centres (GCCs) in the country is a testament to the government’s commitment to fostering innovation and growth.
Additionally, the government aims to develop a future-ready workforce by leveraging the high number of STEM graduates produced in India. Initiatives such as ‘Digital India’, ‘Make in India’, ‘Design in India’, and ‘Serve from India’ are designed to empower local businesses and encourage them to compete on a global scale. These efforts are crucial for transforming the economy and ensuring that the electronics industry remains competitive.
India as a Global Partner
In his speech, Minister Goyal emphasized India’s vision of being a global partner. He described the nation as one family that seeks equitable and balanced partnerships with countries worldwide. India aims to engage with developed nations from a position of strength, offering high-quality goods and services at affordable prices.
This approach not only enhances India’s global standing but also fosters goodwill and cooperation among nations. By prioritizing quality and affordability, India can build strong trade relationships that benefit all parties involved. The government’s commitment to transforming the economy and supporting local businesses will be vital in achieving this vision.
