Strengthening India-Sri Lanka Mineral Cooperation
In a significant move towards enhancing bilateral relations, Union Minister of State for Coal and Mines, Shri Satish Chandra Dubey, met with Shri Sunil Handunnetti, the Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development from Sri Lanka. The meeting took place at Shastri Bhawan in New Delhi and focused on fostering cooperation in mineral exploration and mining. Both leaders recognized the importance of securing critical minerals that are vital for the economic and industrial growth of both nations. Focus on Critical Minerals
During the meeting, Shri Dubey emphasized the significance of India’s National Critical Mineral Mission. This initiative aims to ensure a steady supply of essential raw materials such as lithium, graphite, nickel, cobalt, and copper. These materials are crucial for India’s ambitious renewable energy targets. The Minister pointed out that India is actively working to grant mining rights for critical minerals. This includes forging international partnerships and encouraging Indian companies to acquire mineral assets globally.
Both leaders engaged in detailed discussions about exploration opportunities and technological collaboration. They also explored investment prospects in the mineral sector. A notable point of discussion was the potential for mineral exploration on a Government-to-Government (G2G) basis. The Geological Survey of India (GSI) expressed interest in conducting mineral assessments in Sri Lanka. In response, Sri Lanka requested India to promote Indian companies’ participation in the exploration and development of its beach sand and graphite resources.
Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Mineral Resources
Another key topic of discussion was the finalization of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on “Cooperation in the Field of Geology and Mineral Resources.” This agreement is between India’s Ministry of Mines and Sri Lanka’s Geological Survey & Mines Bureau. Shri Dubey expressed optimism that this MoU would create a robust framework for enhancing collaboration in capacity building, mining exploration, and advanced mineral processing.
The MoU aims to facilitate knowledge exchange and skill development in the mining sector. Shri Dubey reiterated India’s commitment to supporting Sri Lanka in modernizing its mining industry through technological and financial assistance. This partnership is expected to enhance the capabilities of Sri Lanka’s mining sector, ensuring sustainable development and efficient resource management.
