Strengthening India-EU Trade Relations

In a significant move towards enhancing trade relations, Commerce and Industry Minister Shri Piyush Goyal met with Mr. Maroลก ล efฤoviฤ, the European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security. This high-level dialogue took place in Brussels from January 18 to 19, 2025. It marked the first in-person meeting between the two leaders, following an introductory video conference in December 2024. The discussions were characterized by mutual respect and a focus on establishing a new framework for the India-European Union (EU) strategic agenda in trade and investments.

A Vision for Economic Partnership

During the meeting, Minister Goyal emphasized the Indian government’s commitment to transforming the nation into a developed country by 2047. He outlined six key principles aimed at fostering a mutually beneficial partnership between India and the EU. The first principle highlighted the importance of a relationship grounded in shared values such as democracy, rule of law, and an independent judiciary. Goyal stressed that this partnership would serve as a trusted platform for developing an economic relationship that integrates the combined market of over $24 trillion. This integration promises unprecedented opportunities for the 2 billion people residing in India and the EU.

The second principle focused on creating a commercially meaningful trade agenda. Goyal called for a fair and equitable approach that addresses both tariff and non-tariff barriers. Simplifying these barriers will enhance cost competitiveness, benefiting businesses on both sides, particularly small and medium enterprises, farmers, and fishermen. This commitment to fairness aims to ensure that all stakeholders can thrive in the evolving trade landscape.

Advancing Quality and Standards

The third principle discussed during the dialogue was India’s ambition to become a high-quality product market. Goyal reiterated Prime Minister Modi’s vision for “zero defect” and “zero effect” production capabilities. To achieve this, India seeks to engage with the EU in exchanging best practices and harmonizing standards. This collaboration will help build mutual processes that elevate product quality and sustainability, ensuring that both regions can compete effectively in global markets.

Additionally, the fourth principle emphasized the need for cooperation in developing cutting-edge technologies. Goyal highlighted the importance of securing critical raw material supply chains and building resilient supply chains. This approach aims to reduce dependencies on non-market economies while fostering closer economic ties between India and the EU. By working together, both regions can enhance their technological capabilities and ensure a stable supply of essential resources.

Sustainable Development and Future Collaborations

The fifth principle discussed was the importance of trade cooperation in sustainable development. Goyal stressed the need for a fair approach that considers the varying levels of development between India and the EU. This principle aligns with the concept of “common but differentiated responsibility,” recognizing that both regions must work together to achieve sustainable growth while respecting their unique circumstances.

Lastly, Goyal expressed India’s aspiration to become a living bridge with the EU, leveraging its young and talented workforce. This partnership aims to foster mutual growth and development, creating opportunities for collaboration in various sectors. The leaders outlined political directions for their teams to develop a robust Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and a mutually beneficial agenda for trade and investment. They also reviewed progress in the India-EU Trade and Technology Council (TTC) and agreed to address legacy issues while laying out a roadmap for continuous consultations at both senior and ministerial levels.
