Stock Market Update: Nifty50 Surpasses 24,100 as BSE Sensex Gains Over 500 Points in Early Trading

Stock markets in India experienced a significant surge in early trading on Monday, buoyed by a decline in crude oil prices and supportive comments from US President Donald Trump regarding maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz. The Nifty50 index surpassed the 24,100 mark, while the BSE Sensex climbed over 500 points. As of 9:16 AM, the Nifty50 was at 24,166.55, reflecting an increase of 169 points or 0.70%, and the BSE Sensex reached 77,486.95, up 573 points or 0.75%. Despite this positive momentum, analysts caution that the market may face challenges in the near term due to ongoing foreign institutional selling and geopolitical tensions.

Market Trends and Influences

Experts suggest that the Indian stock market is likely to remain range-bound in the short term, influenced by several factors. Continued foreign institutional selling, a weakening rupee, and elevated crude oil prices are expected to weigh on market performance. VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments Limited, noted that while the market’s immediate reaction may be swayed by state election results, particularly in West Bengal, the broader trend will be dictated by crude oil prices. The recent announcement from President Trump regarding US assistance for ships in the Strait of Hormuz has contributed to a drop in Brent crude prices to around $108 per barrel. However, the lack of a formal peace agreement between the US and Iran keeps oil prices above the $100 mark, adding to market uncertainty.

Foreign Institutional Investors’ Activity

The behavior of foreign institutional investors (FIIs) is another critical factor impacting the market. The ongoing momentum in artificial intelligence (AI) trading suggests that FIIs may continue to sell shares in India, which could limit the performance of large-cap stocks. Analysts believe that any rally prompted by domestic political developments may be leveraged by FIIs to offload more shares. This trend indicates a potential shift in focus towards broader market segments, as large-cap stocks may face pressure from continued selling activity.

Global Market Context

Asian markets opened higher on Monday, reflecting a positive sentiment among investors. Crude oil prices exhibited volatility as market participants assessed mixed signals from the Middle East. Strong corporate earnings have provided support for technology stocks, contributing to overall market strength. In the US, equities closed on a high note on Friday, with both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq reaching record closing levels. The combination of robust corporate earnings and falling oil prices has driven these indices, marking their strongest monthly gains in several years. However, the absence of a formal resolution between the US and Iran continues to cast a shadow over oil prices, keeping them firmly above the $100 threshold.
