Elon Musk’s Starlink has officially embarked on its journey to provide satellite internet services in India, with Maharashtra becoming the first state to collaborate with the company. The Maharashtra government announced this significant partnership on Wednesday, marking a pivotal moment in the nation’s efforts to enhance its digital infrastructure. This initiative aims to deliver high-speed internet access to underserved areas, thereby bridging the digital divide in the region.
Maharashtra Takes the Lead
The Maharashtra government has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with Starlink to implement its satellite-based internet services throughout the state. This initiative is designed to extend high-speed connectivity to government institutions, rural communities, and essential public infrastructure. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis emphasized that the rollout will focus on remote and underserved districts, including Gadchiroli, Nandurbar, Washim, and Dharashiv, which have historically faced challenges in accessing reliable digital services. In a statement shared on X, the Chief Minister’s Office highlighted that “with Starlink’s cutting-edge satellite technology, Maharashtra takes a bold leap forward in bridging the last digital divide, powering education, healthcare, and connectivity in every corner of our state.”
A Milestone in Digital Inclusion
This partnership represents the first formal collaboration between an Indian state and Starlink, the satellite internet initiative under Elon Musk’s SpaceX. Chief Minister Fadnavis described the agreement as a “giant leap towards a future-ready Maharashtra,” asserting that the state is poised to lead the nation in satellite-enabled digital infrastructure. The introduction of Starlink is anticipated to significantly benefit students, small businesses, and local administrations in rural areas where traditional broadband options are limited. However, the successful rollout of these services will hinge on obtaining regulatory and compliance approvals from India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT).
What’s Next for Starlink in India
Recently, Starlink conducted demonstration runs in Mumbai on October 30 and 31 to showcase its compliance with Indian security and technical standards. The company has plans to establish nine gateway earth stations in major cities, including Mumbai, Noida, Chandigarh, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Lucknow. Once the necessary approvals are secured, Starlink aims to deliver satellite broadband speeds of up to 600 Gbps through its Gen 1 constellation, which could revolutionize connectivity in some of India’s most remote regions. This development is poised to enhance digital access and foster economic growth in areas that have long been underserved.
