SRH’s Head Coach Speaks Out on Mohammed Shami Ahead of IPL 2025

New Delhi: Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) head coach Daniel Vettori has addressed concerns regarding Mohammed Shami’s performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Despite being a prominent player, Shami has struggled this season, recording only six wickets in nine matches with a high economy rate of 11.23. Vettori attributed this downturn to a lack of recent T20 cricket. Additionally, Vettori explained why Nitish Kumar Reddy has had limited bowling opportunities this season, citing injury issues.
### Mohammed Shami’s Struggles
Daniel Vettori emphasized that Mohammed Shami’s infrequent participation in T20 matches has hindered his performance this IPL season. Shami, 34, previously enjoyed success and recognition, notably winning the Purple Cap in 2023 while playing for Gujarat Titans. This season, however, he has been unable to replicate that form, leading to his omission from the SRH lineup in the second half of the tournament. Vettori noted that adjusting back to the fast-paced nature of T20 cricket after a long layoff has posed challenges for Shami.
“He worked exceptionally hard and was desperate to do well, but it just wasn’t quite his season,” Vettori stated. Shami’s performance this year has raised questions, especially given his previous accolades. Vettori expressed confidence that Shami’s quality as a bowler would enable him to rebound in future seasons.
### Nitish Kumar Reddy’s Limited Role
The head coach also shed light on Nitish Kumar Reddy’s reduced role in SRH’s bowling attack this season. Former bowling coach Dale Steyn had previously questioned why Reddy wasn’t utilized more, suggesting he could be valuable with his bowling skills. Vettori clarified that Reddy entered the tournament with a side strain, which limited his participation early on.
Despite having impressive performances last year, where he scored 303 runs and took three wickets, Reddy has struggled in IPL 2025, accumulating only 182 runs in 11 innings and bowling in just three matches. Vettori explained that Reddy’s fitness issues delayed his contributions, but the team anticipated his return to bowling in the latter part of the tournament.
### SRH’s Overall Performance
SRH’s performance throughout IPL 2025 has been underwhelming, finishing sixth in the standings with six wins and seven losses. The team faced difficulties in maintaining consistency, which ultimately affected their playoff chances. Vettori acknowledged the challenges faced by players like Shami and Reddy and emphasized the need for learning and growth moving forward.
He remains optimistic about Reddy’s potential, stating, “he’s too good a player not to bounce back.” The head coach’s insights highlight the importance of addressing individual player struggles while fostering a competitive team environment as SRH looks to improve in future seasons.
