Skill Development Initiatives Transform India’s Workforce

The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) is driving a nationwide effort to enhance the skills of youth in India through the Craftsmen Training Scheme (CTS). Implemented by the Directorate General of Training (DGT), this initiative operates through a vast network of Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs), reaching young people across the country, including Assam. The DGT is also rolling out the Flexi MoU Scheme and the Dual System of Training (DST) to create a more industrially focused training environment, facilitating stronger ties between education and industry.

Industry-Focused Skill Development Projects

In a related development, the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) is working on a pan-India scheme to enhance competitiveness in the capital goods sector. The Scheme for ‘Enhancement of Competitiveness in the Indian Capital Goods Sector- II’ aims to address skill deficits in this critical area of the economy. Projects have been sanctioned by the MHI to foster skill development initiatives across the capital goods sector.

Among the significant initiatives, the Automotive Skills Development Council (ASDC) in New Delhi is set to develop 23 Qualification Packs tailored for the automotive sector. Additionally, the Capital Goods Skill Council and the Instrumentation Automation Surveillance and Communication (IASC) Sector Skill Council are tasked with creating 23 and 12 Qualification Packs respectively, specifically designed for capital goods. These Qualification Packs will set standards for skill levels 6 and above, ensuring that competencies align with industry requirements.

Local Employment and Standardized Skill Competencies

The development of these Qualification Packs is crucial for promoting localized employment opportunities across India, including regions like Assam. By establishing standardized, industry-relevant skill competencies, these initiatives aim to enhance the employability of the youth and meet the evolving demands of the job market. The efforts reflect a commitment to fostering a skilled workforce that can adapt to modern technologies and practices.
